A post of wintertime odds & ends from Rebecca...

~ Adam e-mailed me a drawing of Sable a few weeks ago. I printed it out and hung it on the back of door, although it doesn't look as good as the original because the school printer only does black and white, not color. I'm hoping next to find a copy of the Joan of Arc painting that Sara bought a copy of after we saw it on our last trip to NYC. (I can't remember now what it's called or who painted it.) I like the idea of us both looking at it everyday. That's what I do whenever I feel homesick lately: I find something that somebody else I know has up in their house and print it out, so we can be looking at the same things everyday. So far I have the painting Flaming June, because I'm pretty sure that Grandma & the Mortimers both have copies of that, and I have a poem that Aunt Verna & Uncle Steve had hanging in their bathroom. It went like, "With beauty around me I walk, / With beauty before me I walk," and it was on a big orange-ish poster. I also want something by Norman Rockwell, because I know Grandma has lots of stuff by him, but so far, he's been difficult to find online.

~ I heard something on CNN International about this new movie, The Golden Compass, that Catholics are boycotting because it represents the Catholic Church as evil, or something like that. Oh, those Catholics. Anyway, I looked it up on YouTube, and it turns out that Freddie Highmore has a small part in it, and I found this clip of him talking about good vs. evil and the nature of demons. It sounds cheesy, I know, but he actually had some interesting ideas. He still looks young, but he's not the Tiny Tim he used to be.

~ I made bacon & eggs this weekend! They turned out very well, almost exactly the same as the ones I make there. (I was worried they would suck, because American pretzels are actually toasted dough, whereas French pretzels are more like puffed-up air and don't have as much substance to them.) But it was all good, and the other assistants all loved them. I think I'll try to make some more for my students before Christmas break.

~ The weather was horrible this weekend. Seriously, the win sounds like this giant wild animal that keeps roaring around the school. It gets very creepy when I've got to walk back from the computer room to my room, because by 6pm, it's already as dark as midnight, and the wind is roaring and rattling the windows so much that I'd swear it's alive.

~ Speaking of which, I should probably go make that walk now and get stuff ready for my classes tomorrow. Last Friday, I was talking to one of my teachers at lunch, and she was like, "You're coming to my class today, aren't you?" And when I said yes, and then she was like, "So, what are we gonna do?" And I was like, "Um, I don't know?" and she was like, "Yeah, me neither." O-kay. But it's comforting to know that at least one teacher doesn't know what she's doing, either. She's the one who makes a lot of mistakes in English, which I find funny. Last class she kept pronouncing decade like dee-cade. Haha.
