In which Rebecca makes her grandma proud - in technicolor!

I wouldn't have thought I was old enough yet to be getting cricks in my joints, but I guess I am. My left knee has been aching pretty bad lately, but fortunately, it seems to be only when I climb stairs. I've been trying to bend/stretch that leg more, which has helped. My jaw pain has been flaring up again too, but that's really my own fault for still biting my nails and constantly holding my chin in my hand. This puts too much pressure on your jaw, especially when you do it for long periods like I do. Ugh. I have got to kick these habits.

For some reason, since we moved into the new place, we've been keeping plants alive, which isn't something we've ever really done before. So far, all of them have been in pots on the back patio, but I have plans to make a flowerbed out of a dirt patch in front of the window next spring. Anyway, I wanted to put up some pictures of our 2015 summer garden. (These are all iPhone photos! The camera on my new phone is almost as good as my "real" camera!)

I bought this little pink petunia for sale on Mother's Day (for myself, not my mom) and it has stayed in good shape since then. Despite some heavy thunderstorms and many brutally hot days, it has kept putting out pink blossoms all summer (and still in its original pot). You can see Sara's tomato plants and our watering can in the second picture.

Sara bought this purple cleopatra shortly after we moved in, and it has kept putting out blossoms all summer, too. It was originally in a hanging basket, but she transferred to a larger standing pot. Its flowers are in a few different shades of purple. Purple was always Grandma's favorite color.

Can you believe that this watermelon was grown from a packet of seeds (not a seedling!) from the dollar bin at Target? Sara planted two other seeds at the same time (strawberry and mint, I think) and neither one ever really grew... but the watermelon plant grew like crazy right from the start! There are currently four mini watermelons on it. The one above is the biggest and has grown a bit since I took this photo, but it still isn't big enough to eat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll actually sink our teeth into our very own homegrown watermelon before the summer is over!

Sara also planted some tomato plants (regular and cherry), but neither one has yeilded any tomatoes yet. I also have a cornflower plant, and so far, it's put out some very big and healthy-looking leaves and stems, but no flowers yet. Next year, I want to get a jump on this and plant some cucumbers. I've missed fresh, homegrown cucumbers so much since Grandma died.

pictures, summer
