I attended my first Jewish wedding yesterday! The couple getting married happened to be good friends with a couple from my hometown temple, who drove in from Louisiana for their wedding. So for me, the best part was getting to see them again! I hadn't seen anyone from my old temple since we moved in May (except on Facebook) and sometimes I've felt so homesick. T and S are such nice people; we spent hours
frying fifty pounds of potatoes into latkes last December!
D and J, the couple getting married, very graciously invited me to their wedding the first time I met them, when they found out I was friends with T and S. Their ceremony was small but so lovely. The lights were all off in the temple sanctuary, which has huge glass windows, and the cloudy gray day created a soft filter. (Unfortunately, it was way too dim for photos.) There were candles under the chuppah and a capella singing. I did feel kinda awkward attending the wedding of people I barely knew, so I tried to take up as little space as possible... until I got to the buffet table afterwards, where, of course, I completely embarrassed myself! But it was worth it for those petite-fours. I should've taken a picture of those!
I also really enjoyed the conversations around the table with other guests I'd never met before, many of whom converted, about all the different ways we found Judaism. It's a journey that I've been so grateful for, and I loved hearing others share their experiences.
D and J kissing and holding their beautiful ketubah! Siman tov u'mazel tov!
I will always remember them because they were my first Jewish wedding, just like I will always remember Jakob for being
my first bar mitzvah.
