Connecticut massacre and mental health

Let me start by saying that I am definitely for stricter gun control - across the board. What worries me, though, is that a HUGE emphasis is being placed on mental health issues and guns. While I agree that thorough background checks are extremely important, there doesn't seem to be a differentiation between TREATED and UNTREATED mental illness. For instance, there are a ton of people in the world who have mental illness, but are well treated with medicine and psychotherapy, which renders them "normal"  in terms of mental health. Why should these people be denied their constitutional right to bear arms? I think that more care needs to be taken, both in the media and in the government to not further stigmatize mental illness as a surefire path to violence. Just my two cents.
