The last few days our hometown has been swallowed into a big cloud of fog and humidity. Laundry doesn't dry anymore, there's no horizon visible on the sea and paper documents flying around turn moist spontaneously. Thank god the invaders are leaving and going back to Paris, so the beach slowly turns empty and the streets as ghosttownlike as I prefer it.
I read at the moment:
This book is hilarious...especially the episodes about the Ramones (and their glue habbits), the Stooges (and their traffic issues) and the MC5 (and their PR problems). Plus it explains a lot of musical and personal connections I never knew about, it's extremely well documented and a very light entertaining read about times that seem like a different planet from a 21th century point of view.
My favourite (live) band at the moment (although V pointed out, that QOTSA are bloody amazing and she's right, so yes, they have to share the throne):
These guys are an awesome band, I know it's not exactly insiders knowledge, but everyone should believe the hype. White/Benson as a songwriter duo have Lennon/McCartney or Jagger/Richards qualities, they play guitar like a two-headed-Jimmy Page monster - perhaps even bluesier (and they have his full recognition). Keeler/Lawrence are a raw, powerful and groovy rhythm section and Lawrence especially comes across a bit goofy/geeky, but very cute and highly entertaining to watch. I've seen them twice in festivals and they managed to tear the roof apart both times, in Rock en Seine they had the best response I've ever seen for a band there. Jack White is an incredible frontman, very intense, visceral, unique singer, flexible in choice of instruments and he owns every song he decides to cover, be it Dolly Partons "Jolene" or Nancy Sinatras "Bang Bang" and he gets away with singing these songs, that are written from a female perspective, without it coming across phony or weird at all. Anyone who doesn't go to see them live decides to miss rock'n'roll history in the making (and probably the best live act around).
