The Hobbit

I saw 'The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies' last night.

[spoilers]Thoughts: in general, nowhere near as bad as most of the reviews I read had led me to believe.  I mean, I'm not going to go rushing out to buy the DVD, but it was fairly enjoyable for a couple of hours.  It didn't feel overlong to me, which was my main fear.  I liked the little inclusions of Galadriel and the Nine, as pinpoints forward to Lord Of The Rings, although it confused my parents who had forgotten pretty much all the previous Hobbit films as well as LOTR.  I thought Thorin's storyline was well-played out and I was actually pretty upset at the deaths of Kili and Fili.  Plus bonus Billy Connolly! The ending in the Shire was a nice dose of humour - Martin Freeman as Bilbo is especially brilliant, and I'm a bit sad to see the end of that in particular.

All in all, there was quite a lot to enjoy.  It's not the masterpiece, though, that I think Peter Jackson probably wanted to make - it doesn't really feel like an epic end to a story like 'Return Of The King' felt for LOTR.  Maybe that's because it's not an end, but it's the end for Bilbo and the dwarves.

Has anyone else seen it? What did you think?

And also - happy new year to you all! Here's to 2015!
