Yo, so Paris has been lovely and sunny for about two weeks now and it's nice! Even the Parisians are happy, but even when it hit 20 degrees they were still wrapped up in winter coats and boots and giving me in my summer shoes and cardigan funny looks. Whatever, Parisians. Warm weather means picnics in parks, walks along the Seine, a boat trip and a ride in a hot air balloon (who knew there was a hot air balloon in Paris?), which was pretty amazing and probably the coolest thing I have ever done. Ever.
Went through a period of musical nostalgia lately, mainly because nothing new is inspiring me at the moment. So I went back and listened to stuff which reminds me of secondary school - 'Teenage Dirtbag' from random lunchtime singalongs, 'C'est La Vie' from a friend's karaoke performance in second year, and the entirety of Green Day's 'American Idiot'. It's funny how I still remember all the words, even though if I heard it now I probably wouldn't even like it much.
I actually don't have many musical memories from secondary school, because my group of friends were all into different things and we lived in a small town where bands never came anyway so we didn't go to concerts. But 'American Idiot' sticks in my head as the one album that literally everybody had - to the extent that one boy copied it for a friend of mine in our form class and we all sat around and recited the track listing for her. She was also the first person in our locker room to get an iPod. It must be so weird growing up now when you and all your friends have iPods - back then it was such a novelty.
(And: were we quite astute for 14/15 year olds in relating 'American Idiot' to the war in Iraq? I remember reading newspapers quite avidly around that time and realising probably for the first time that the world was a lot bigger than just me and my town.)
(One other musical memory of secondary school: in IT when the boy next to me boasted about downloading a leaked copy of 'Inside In/Inside Out' by The Kooks via Limewire. This was the first time I heard of Limewire, and probably also downloading and leaking. Not exciting, but true.)
(One last one: me and my friend sitting in the library after school printing out lyrics to Divine Comedy songs. Printed because we didn't have the internet at home. How fast things have changed.)
Sorry for the rambling and disjointed writing today.
Why do I keep thinking about secondary school? I don't think I miss it, really, so why is it constantly on my mind?
Also: I keep saying 'Yo!' and I don't really know why. Sorry.
real life,
music
