It occurred to me this morning that perhaps the reason that my phones don't work is that they're not getting any power. Copper lines draw power from the phone company (it's why traditional landlines work even when the electricity goes out), but fiber-optic cables--like the ones just installed in this community--don't carry any power.
If this were true, it would mean that my DSL should work, because the router does have its own external power source. So I turned it on this morning. Nope.
Drat.
(I didn't really think this would work, but it was worth checking.)
