Gay Marriage Bill Expected To Become Law By The End Of The Week

Don't read the comments cos it might wipe the smile off your face.

Personally, I don't see the point in marriage. It's a ritual designed for the property transfer of a woman from her father to her new husband. My parents got married to stop my mother getting deported (they were never engaged. The whole thing was planned and done in about 12 hours. She'd just entered a Middle Eastern country alone without a Visa, they were kind of in a hurry). Therefore I didn't always see the point in fighting for marriage rights, because what's the point, you know if you're in a committed relationship or not, let the bigots keep their little ceremonies and get a civil partnership for the tax breaks. BUT a while ago write_light made some points which kind of changed my mind, that basically the institution of a union is older than the Christian/Capitalist property transfer and ought to be the same civil right for all people, afforded by the state, and called the same thing, whatever you want to call it. With which I agree. Obviously I am all about civil rights, and my distaste for the institutionalized churches of this country knows no bounds, so if straight people have the right to get married by the state and call it married, gay people damn well get it too, whether they want to use it or not, and the churches can do what the fuck they want whilst the rest of us continue to ignore them.
