Big Government Work vs. Big Government Not Work

Sep 20, 2013 01:12

It's 1:00 AM, and I'm just getting home from work. I've been working on a HUGE submission for a new medical device. Like, four crates of volumes huge. And not only is the submission huge, it is also a huge, stinkin' concern for the FDA. Our upper brass are heavily focused on this company right now. In fact, the head of all Medical Devicedom at the FDA is having a private meeting with them in a few weeks. The only reason why I was put in charge of a project this big and this important is that we are understaffed and overwhelmed.

But - knock on wood - I'm just about done the first phase of the review. So the company should get our first set of questions... right around the time the Federal Government shuts down.

Well, crap.

So I sent the company my cell number and my personal e-mail address today, with instructions to contact me there with any questions, in case the United States is closed.

Too much? Maybe. But I'll tell you what - if our head Medical Devicedom asks them in their meeting how things are going between them and the reviewers, the first thing they'll say is, "We've got a great relationship! In fact, one of your guys gave us his home phone number so we could continue working through a government shut down."

Just because I'm a dedicated civil servant doesn't mean that I'm not also a sneaky little bastard.
