OK so here's a promised public post on my new and wonderful iPhone.
OK first of all, I am totally unsure as to why i like this iPhone experience 100% over my previous one; in fact, I don't just like, i love love love the damn thing! My Dad had a theory that it maybe because of siri in the iPhone 4S, but this is not the case as I hardly use siri; Well I do use it to dial numbers and have tested it on SMS messages, and though it does work, I haven't got it to work on longer messages. siri is very good and will get even better with new updates I'm sure, but no, it's not actually the reason why I'm loving my iPhone more than i did the iPhone 3.
But yeh, what can I ssay? it's the best thing I've bought in years and years! I have 2.5 pages of iPhone apps and it's constantly growing. I've started hanging out on
Applevis a lot, reading about accessible apps and recommending great ones I've used; I submitted the 3AW app to it because I finally downloaded it a few weeks ago, and I was so surprised and of course pleased that it was 100% accessible.
So I guess it was about a month ago now when I got the iPhone; maybe three weeks; damn was intending to write all about it, but I never got around to it. Let's see, i got the iPhone case (which is totally different from what I'd requested) at my door when I was home taking a sicky while doing my collection re kidneys, then I got the iPhone screen protector redirected to my parents as it arrived here while I was at work, then finally the iPhone about 1.5 weeks later. Dad was at Rye at the time, but when he got home, he put the protector on for me, then I went around there on the wednesday after work and I was getting use to using it again etc.
Because we didn't get it from a physical store, we were wondering how I was going to get all my contacts from my standard sim on to the phone. I didn't want to have to do it manually as there was so many of them, so through writing to the ausie list I'm on, someone made mention that it is possible to chop a standard sim down to a micro sim, but of course it was vertually impossible for blindies. I then was doing a google search, and found a site with instructions on how to do this. I'd sent it to dad as I had asked him if he'd heard of such a process. So Dad, who had my standard sim with him just in case he could figure out a way, decided to take it upon himself to chop down the sim for me. He then came to my house, and after a bit of fiddling, was able to get it in my iPhone and sure enough the contacts automatically started importing on to my phone; so I guess this meant that I didn't have to order a micro sim afterall but, as I had and the standard one had already been cansiled, we just swapped them over again and then I was all set with the contacts; what a very clever Dad i have!
I'd expressed interest in an iPhone case with a magnet flap, so dad picked me up one from Carombeen Gardens which is awesome; love it!
I find the Mac iTunes an absolute breeze to download iPhone apps on too, unlike trying to use it in windows with jaws; the mac absoluteley rules; it's sinch!
This morning, i took a photo of Joy and my parents (who dropped Heartly around while off to rye) said it was actually pretty good, so I uploaded it to facebook and have had heaps of positive feedback about her of course, plus my technique from my awesome sighted mates.
I took one of heartly too but as i couldn't get her to sit, I don't think it was as accurate; I might get my parents to take one of her as my work mates haven't really met her.
So yeh, the more i play with the phone (which is a lot), the better and quicker I can navigate around, and I can type a lot quicker now using the touch typing method, but it's still pretty slow; I plan to get a little bluetooth keyboard; Irene actually offered me her old one as she no longer uses it so yeah for that. Dictation is OK, but as with Siri, not the best yet. Some of my blind friends have ordered specially-adapted screen protectors with dots on all of the controls and say typing is a bit easier with that, so may end up ordering some myself at some point.
