A major debate among geophycists, geologists, and biologists is the causes of a series of mass extinction events throughout earth history. The idea that extinctions, such as the one that killed all the dinosaurs, have been caused by massive meteor strikes has never been proven beyond a doubt. An alternative theory is that sudden, violent volcanic eruptions that were powerful enough to break up continents did the job. One version of this alternative theory suggests that a massive release of explosive carbon gas into the atmosphere from just under the earth's crust could create a crater and debris dispersement pattern that resembled an extraterrestrial collision and killed lots and lots of living things.
These blasts have been dubbed "Verneshots."
Which makes me giggle.
