My Neighborhood

I have lived in Flatbush, Brooklyn for almost 6 years come June. Over the years i have seen many things and learned many interesting things about its history. The neighborhood alone is famous to most Brooklynites for its heavy commercial business district. A majority of the old buildings from the early 1900's are still standings just have a different purpose now. Most of the people that live here are hard working middle class people. The neighborhood is very diverse, and you can experience many different cultures.

The two main streets in Flatbush are Flatbush avenue and Church avenue. Both streets are extremely busy due to all the commercial traffic that you will find there everyday. Away from the busy streets you have the quite settings of the neighborhood. As you walk along the streets you notice a drastic change in scenery due to the different types of people living in that certain part. One one side of the street you may see a group of 6 story buildings, one the other side you may see a bunch of houses that are only still around because they have been historically preserved. In between it all you well find several elementary schools and one really big high school. Located in Flatbush is SUNY Downstate Hospital and across the street from that is Kings County Hospital which takes up about 8 to 10 blocks all around.

I always said that Flatbush was the center of Brooklyn. There are about 10 local bus lines and 5 express bus routes that run through it to different parts of Brooklyn or Manhattan. There are 4 main train lines that originally were built to service the area and its main in habitants. The prospect express way is also available for cars to get to the BQE. Due to the neighborhoods main inhabitants and visitors daily parking, litter, traffic are some of its biggest problems which the city seems to be failing in its attempt to resolve.

The neighborhood has gotten better over the years that i lived here. It had a reputation for not being a safe place to be wondering around at night. Now you hear about less crimes and more police patrol the streets at night. It gives it a safer feeling compared to earlier years. A down side to this neighborhood is that most of the parks and recreational nightly activity such as restaurants, bars, clubs, pool halls, bowling alleys, and movie theaters are located around the area. Prospect Park is the closed park to Flatbush which is on the border of the area.

I grown accustomed to the attitude of the neighborhood and the people in it. The different organizations, activities, stores, and community leaders keep the spirit of the neighborhood as the years continue. It changes everyday with new transit routes and affordable housing that continue to be built up around the neighborhood. Another sign or change is along with that affordable housing you see condos going up in places that you wouldn't really think twice about. Over all my neighborhood would be a good example of some of the little things that keep this big city going.
