Completed first draft of "Kissing Luna" this morning and sent it off to my
Clarion West Write-a-thon sponsors. With this story, I've exceeded my Write-a-thon goal. I wound up writing three new stories, revising and submitting two, and writing three thousand new words to my novel. In total, I've written about 10,000 words since I started writing six weeks ago. The last time I showed anyone a story in first draft status was at Clarion West. Kissing Luna is indeed in a rough state but the skeleton of what I want to tell is there. A lot needs to be fleshed out, I will probably cut stuff out, compress some things, and get rid of the repetitions (which I seem fond of in first draft).
It's still possible to sponsor writers who are participating in the write-a-thon. While Clarion West is winding down to a close (today is their last day and oh how that last day feels... I remember it all too well. It's like saying goodbye to your family), Clarion San Diego has still got a week to go and the
Clarion Write-a-thon is still looking for more donors. Their goal is to achieve 10,000 dollars and every dollar donated towards the write-a-thon is a dollar towards a good cause.
I'll be working on other stories in the next week or so. I have to complete work on the story I want to send to the Alternative Alamat project (deciding which myth to couple it to is turning out to be an interesting challenge), and I've been invited to submit a story which is political in nature. I really want to do both of those things and so I will be working on that through August.

To celebrate first draft status, I took the kids out to the city and we went and visited our favorite electronic shop where I discovered their anime section. I purchased a dvd of Grave of the Fireflies which I discovered through
ldragoon . It's a beautiful, beautiful story and while it is available on youtube, I wanted to have a copy of the film for myself. I think there is a point to how offering your work for free on the internet can result in sales of your work. I know that if I find an author whose work I enjoy reading online, I tend to go and look for a real book copy of that work. Yep. I don't know what this tendency is called. I had it even when I was in the Philippines. It wasn't enough to just hear of the book or to borrow the book, I had to have a real copy of the book. When I look at my little library (one bookcase in the living room, and three overflowing ones upstairs) I can't help feeling a sense of satisfaction. We are getting more shelves to house all the books floating around the house, but I love them all, and there's nothing like being able to revisit an old friend anytime you want to. I tell my son, Someday, you will be grateful for all those books. You will read them and a whole wide world will open up in front of you.
