It's most likely Illyria (but she died in the comics, too, so...)

I have a theory!

1) it's a "gotcha" (a dream / hallucination / demon, whatnot)

2) there will be some new convoluted explanation that Illyria's death somehow "freed" Fred's soul.

3) The writers are just flat-out ignoring tv show canon, a la ignoring the fact that Willow killed Warren when they brought him back in S8.

In any case, don't ask - you'll only wind up with a headache.

Or they will just repeat what already was in "Spike: After the Fall": when Illyria is in a bad shape, she uncontrollably turns into Fred.

Was this also canon for AtS or comics-canon thing? (I see them as two separate canons anyway.)

The "uncontrollable" part is strictly from comic-verse.
