Ah, this icon, so appropriate.
Linkin Park, Incubus, Mutemath (8/29/12)
Blah blah blah, no one wants any of the narrative here, it's just a bunch of squeeing and flailing.
Venue: Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, Alpharetta, GA. 8/10. Pros: Bathrooms, plentiful vending, marching bands working the vending, variety of seat types, the hill looked fun, the sound was excellent. Cons: The parking is FUCKING FAR AWAY. Through a pseudo-construction site, a sketchy back parking lot/loading dock, a field lined with dense trees, and a gravel parking lot where no one can hear you scream. It was seriously a 10 minute walk from the designated parking lot to the gate. This is NOT a place I would go by myself. The other con was that it was covered. And it rained. And we didn't get wet. This was a downer.
Honestly, the place is pretty nice, but I require a bodyguard just for the parking thing.
Mutemath: 6/10. Honestly, the only things I know about Mutemath are that 1) they have a song on Rockband and 2) a few friends with alternative music tastes love them. However, they were entertaining. I loved the drummer. I did not know a single song, but I enjoyed the passionate playing of keytars and things I cannot even name. Didn't get super into them or anything, but hey, entertainment.
Incubus: 7/10. EVERYTHING YOU HAVE EVER HEARD IS TRUE. I AM HERE TO CONFIRM IT ALL. Yes, they're really good. Yes, they're really high. Yes, everyone around you is even higher. One guy walked past me with his eyes completely dilated, entirely black, and it was CREEPY. They only played a few of their faster songs, Megalomaniac and Anna Molly really, and then it was slow and stoner-riffic for the rest of the set. I mean, trippy enter-the-void visualizations on the screen and everything, Brandon Boyd pulling his shirt off and wailing soulfully on bongo drums, the works. We relocated twice to get away from overwhelming pot smoke. I... spent a lot of time yawning, waiting for a song that I actually knew, and waiting for Linkin Park. Not sorry.
Linkin Park: 11/10. I DON'T CARE HOW EMO YOU THINK THEY ARE, THEY PUT ON A FUCKING EXCELLENT SHOW. HOLY. SHIT. I'm still fanning myself and it has nothing to do with being there with my boyfriend. GRATUITOUS. WELL-TIMED. FIRE. They did mashups to condense all their fan favorites into an hour. They did a Catalyst cover. THEY HAD FUCKING FIREWORKS. They had a perfect encore. They didn't take a break except one faltered intro that they teased each other for. Chester is superhuman. It was hot as hell in every sense of the word. GO. SEE. THEM. It was totally worth the ticket price and you don't want to know what that was. Also, we got lanyards when coming in the door. And Aaron caught a setlist. My only quibble is that they're damn hippies and our water, which was standard venue price, came in crappy plastic cups. So you had to chug it between sets, as opposed to my standard practice of saving some for after and cramming it in my belt. But HOLY SHIT, GUYS. THEY ARE AMAZING. I... would honestly rank that in the top 3 headline performances I've ever seen, which includes TSO. Just, wow. I was disappointed when they finished, but at the same time, exhausted. The slightly hysterical giggling carried on for another 24 hours. Aaron fell asleep in the car on the way back. We could barely eat at Waffle House and just wanted to collapse. Everyone we saw on the way back to the car was in the same somewhat delirious state. So... basically, perfect. :D
yay!
