White Ribbons
"So, Ali-kun," Tomogashi said as he draped an arm around Ali's shoulders, "did you get that pretty sister of yours something for White Day yet?"
Ali shrugged the other boy's arm off with a frown and a mental note to send a Cardian after him, and then turned his attention to the question. His frown became a puzzled look when he realized that he had no idea what his classmate was talking about. "White Day?"
"Yeah, that's the day after tomorrow you know," the boy replied apparently unconcerned with the rebuff. "So, what did you get her?" Ali looked at him, still confused. "You did get her something, didn't you?" Tomogashi asked as his eyes widened. Everyone knew that En had a temper. "Ali-kun?"
"Um... What's White Day?" Ali asked tentatively.
"What's...?!" Tomogashi asked in shock.
"That's right, you're not from Japan, are you Ali-kun," another classmate named Yamanaka said thoughtfully. "Someone told me once that they don't have White Day in England. Is that really true?"
Ali nodded quickly. "That's very true," he said, glad to have the out. "Never heard of it."
"What about Valentine's Day?" Tomogashi asked, puzzled and curious. Ali kept his mouth shut and waited for Yamanaka to answer.
"Oh yes, they have that. But, instead of girls giving boys chocolate, it's the other way around," the boy obligingly supplied. "Sometimes, the girls give the boys cards, but usually they don't end up with anything."
Tomogashi and a couple other of their male classmates that had drifted over grimaced in distaste. "That doesn't seem fair somehow," one of the others stated.
"So, did any of the girls get you chocolate on Valentine's Day?" Yamanaka asked Ali curiously. Just as everyone knew how pretty and temperamental En was, they all knew how popular Ali was. Personally, Yamanaka blamed it on the flute that Ali liked to play and the mysterious air he liked to cultivate.
Ali thought back over the past few weeks, and then nodded. There had been one day when every girl he had run into had tried to give him some sort of brown food. Only Usagi and En had not. He remembered that quite distinctly.
"And did you accept any of them?" Tomogashi asked with the start of a smirk.
"Um... Maybe..." Ali replied, suddenly uneasy.
"Well, if you accepted chocolate from them on Valentine's Day, then you're obligated to buy them a present for White Day," Tomogashi said triumphantly. The boy next to him looked like he was going to protest, but Tomogashi stepped hard on his foot and he reconsidered.
"I do?" Ali asked, his eyes wide with shock.
"Oh, yes. Every one of them. Doesn't he, Yamanaka-kun? Because for every one you forget to return, bad luck will haunt you for a year," Tomogashi lied with relish.
Ali gulped. "So... Um... What do I have to buy them?" he asked weakly.
"Anything white," Yamanaka replied as he gave Tomogashi a curious look. "The usual gifts are marshmallows or white chocolate."
"And white ribbons," Tomogashi interjected. "White ribbons are preferred." He barely kept the triumphant grin off his face as Ali's face lit up.
"White ribbons? That ought to be easy," the alien replied with relief. "Thanks, Tomogashi-kun."
"Oh, no problem," the other boy replied breezily. "Glad to be of assistance." He and his friends quickly took their leave then, and Ali pulled out his flute.
"Tomogashi-kun..." Yamanaka protested as his friend began to laugh. "You know what will happen if he gives those girls white ribbons!"
"Yeah," his friend replied with a grin. "It'll be so much fun..."
Two days later, Ali was surprised to find himself tying white ribbons on several of the girls at the school. Apparently, that was part of the tradition as well. The problem came when one of the girls he had tied a ribbon on first thing in the morning caught him tying a ribbon onto another girl.
Tears filled her eyes as she whipped off the ribbon. "How... How could you!" she wailed. The girl in front of him widened her eyes and reached up for the ribbon he had just tied on her arm. "I thought... I thought this meant that... How could you!"
Ali soon found himself being chased by wailing, angry girls. Apparently, they thought that the ribbon was a sign of his undying love. As he turned the corner and elevated himself up to the roof to hide, he began going through the list of unused Cardians to find the perfect one to steal Tomogashi's energy with. This definitely called for revenge.
