No matter what

The dome of pure destructive power swelled about them. The building that used to be a school and laboratory was in ruins at their feet. Saturn's spirit raised its glaive and flew at the black swirling wall that composed the body of Pharoh 90.

Sailor Moon felt her heart constrict as the senshi disappeared into the black well. She had to help her. She was the Messiah. She was not supposed to allow this to happen. 'The grail. I gave away the grail to Mistress 9. There is no way to transform. No way...' She closed her eyes briefly while the last two words echoed through her. They hit her heart and were denied. Opening her eyes, she gazed at the black energy wall. 'I am going to do it. I have to save Saturn.' Calling with her heart, she asked for the power to save her friend. Her steps took her to the wall and finally through it, into the vast ocean of black.

Negative energy pulsed about her, cutting at her. Pain shot through her arm. Glancing down, she saw a trail of blood floating away from her skin that was marred with a brilliant red line. Shaken, Sailor Moon stared into the darkness. 'How am I going to find her? How am I going to help?' A streak of purple flashed through the darkness, brightening the repressive gloom. Fixing her eyes on the location, she flew towards it.

Lines of razor sharp energy danced about her. Sun kissed platinum blonde mingled with brilliant red as her hair floated away with trails of her blood. Cuts multiplied, covering her body. One energy line bounced off her tiara, slicing her bangs, distracting her. 'Where is she? Where am I? There is no way to tell up down right or left in here. I have to find her. I can't let anyone die. I can't.' Wrapping her arms about her chest, she closed her eyes so that she could not see the red that was covering the white of her fuku. Somehow, she would find her. Focusing, she looked into her heart, in there somewhere was the clue she needed, she was sure of it.

Her heart crystal glowed in the inky darkness, a brilliant light, a star that had yet to dim. A tug pulled her. Using her mind's eye, she looked at the way the tug was coming from. Strings, ribbons really, flew from her heart streaking in the direction that the tugging coming from. Seven ribbons went in that direction. 'The others. That is the way I came.' Turning her eyes back to the ribbons, she looked for a lone one, one leading away from the others. When she spotted it, she wrapped her hand about it. This was her path, this was her way to find Saturn. Keeping her fingers wrapped lightly she flew towards the end.

The darkness was heaviest where it led her. In the center of that darkness was a glowing pulse of purple. 'Saturn!' As she surged forward, pain lanced through her leg. Jerking her eyes towards it, they glazed over as her brain tried to understand what they were seeing. Her left leg was drifting away from her, the stump leaving gory red trail to show where it had come from.

The ribbon under her hand trembled. 'Saturn... I have to save Saturn.' Resolutely focusing on the ribbon trail, she pushed forward. She didn't feel her other leg when it was severed, or her right arm. She only noticed her left hand when she left it behind, hanging where it had been wrapped about the ribbon. The last bits of her were whittled away by time she came to the heart of the battle.

When she neared the end of the ribbon, she saw purple energy that was so dark that it almost blended with the black. The two energies were flashing about each other. The little white light stared in horror as the purple one sent all its energy into the black void. The darkness ate it up like a black hole. Saturn's light wavered, fading. "No! You can't! You are my friend!"

Saturn turned slightly and saw the white light that had found her so long ago in the cauldron. It was the one that had befriended her and kept her near her since then. "I have to. This is the only way I can protect you. Go back."

Moon raised her head and glared at the figure that was shadowed about the glowing starseed. "You don't have to protect me! You need to come back." She looked down at the white ribbon that turned purple the closer it approached Saturn. Her hand was once again wrapped about it. 'I am as ethereal as she is.'

Clenching her hand on the ribbon, she tugged gently. 'Please come back. That is, unless you want to let go."

Saturn stared into the bright blue eyes that had uncertainty swimming in hope and trust. Turning her gaze back at the shadow creature that still hung before, she noticed that they were close to the gaping maw in the time space stream. 'If I can push it through, we will be safe. Pluto will close it. If I don't let go, maybe I can stay. Maybe I can still be with her.' Casting her glance back at her chosen princess, she reached out and held onto the purple end of the ribbon. Smiling a smile that was full of the love and trust she felt, she hoped Moon understood her message. The smile disappeared when she turned back to Pharoh 90. It was time to end this.

Moon felt the reassurance in the smile Saturn showed her. She was not letting go. Even as she watched Saturn fly towards Pharoh 90, she knew that it was going to be okay, because she wasn't going to let go, no matter what.

Love and confidence washed over Saturn as she forced Pharoh 90 through the hole one centimeter at a time. Moon trusted her. Just like she always had, her princess was backing her up, letting her do what she was supposed to do. Saving her as much as she was saving her princess. She felt her energy burning out, her light dimming as Pharoh 90 sucked her life force from her in his attempt to defeat her. Even as her eyes started to dim, she felt a "pop". She knew that he was gone. That she had won. Her eyes closed as she used her remaining strength to hold onto her lifeline, the ribbon that connected her to the most important one to her.

Moon watched as the rip in the fabric of space closed, sealing Pharoh 90 behind it. Pulling lightly on the ribbon between her hands, she kept Saturn from being sucked through with him. She kept pulling until she could cradle the dim purple light close to her. She had succeeded. She had saved her friend. Now she had to find her way out. Adjusting her position slightly, she saw the other ribbons. 'I'll just follow their lead.' She let their gently tugging pull her and Saturn through the fading darkness. The ragged edges of the debris that was once a building were dimly outlined. It wasn't until she spotted her leg floating away, that she remember that they would not have a physical form when they reached the other side. Reaching deep with in her, she called for the flesh that should cover them. She called up the power to heal them. The power poured out of her, covering her and Saturn. The pieces of her flesh flew to her, melding back together. Remnants of Hotaru pulled itself out of the crumbled rocks and debris and clung about the dim starseed resting in Moons arms.

Her feet touched the ground, her fuku was in tatters, her hair a mess. The other senshi worried about her, as she gazed into the destruction with wide unseeing eyes. The baby in her arms was taken by one of her friends. Saturn was safe. Closing her eyes, she felt relieved.
