Phoebe squeezed her eyes shut as the light began to pulse more quickly and the room began to spin. She panted desperately trying to draw in more air as the congestion which came with her tears began to close off her airways.

“It was supposed to be a surprise,” she heard her cousin say. Opalia's voice seemed thin and distant. “Easy... Easy... Breathe...” A high-pitched ringing noise began to drown out the older girl's words. “I'm sorry.... fault... ..sy...”

Across the room, one of the assistants suddenly stiffened. Doctor Heket and the other assistant gave him a startled look, and then followed his intent glare to the distraught young duchess. All three of them began to look worried and shuffled quickly across the room.

“Phoebe... Phoebe! Are you all right? What's wrong?” Opalia asked as the younger girl suddenly slumped against her. “Phoebe!”

“Excuse us, Highness,” the first assistant said bruskly as he pushed her to the side. He grabbed Phoebe's wrist to check her pulse as Doctor Heket brushed the blonde bangs out of her way and peeled the girl's eyelids open to check her pupils.

“Cold and clammy,” she murmured with a worried frown.

“Her pulse is racing. Over 160,” the first assistant responded. He grimaced as he shifted his weight onto and off of his broken leg.

“What's wrong?” Opalia demanded as she looked from one to the other.

“Emergency is on their way. Epinephrine?” the second assistant said as he held his communicator near his face.

Doctor Heket and the other assistant shook their heads sharply. “Not with that pulse rate,” the doctor said. “Seems more like toxic shock. Anti-B.”

“Heh? Didn't you just say her pulse was too high for epinephrine?”

Opalia's blue eyes swung from one to the other as they continued to quickly debate treatments. After what seemed like an eternity to the frightened princess, the door to the room swung open and several nurses pushed a gurney into the room.

“Princess,” Doctor Heket said as she suddenly focused on the young woman. “You were there, too, weren't you. Do you feel all right?”

“I'm fine,” Opalia replied as she shook her head. Her eyes strayed to the gurney where one of the nurses was pushing a tube into her cousin's mouth and down her throat. “Phoebe... What's happening to Phoebe?”

The doctor placed her free hand on the young woman's shoulder as the nurses began to wheel the teenager's body out of the room. “We don't know, Highness. I think it might be a toxic reaction, but we need to run some tests to be sure. But if you weren't affected... Maybe it is just hysterics overcoming her weakened body.” Her voice sounded doubtful.

“What tests? When will you know? Is she going to be all right?” Opalia's fear grew larger when the slim woman did not respond and averted her gaze. “She is going to be all right? Doctor?”

More to finish out the scene than to start a new section. I just felt like posting it separately. *wink*
