Like Cats and Dogs - III
Continued from Return to Time: Like Cats and Dogs - II

Rubbing the bump on her head, Romana walked slowly into the control room. “Diana, what is the...” Her voice trailed off as she realized that the cat was not in the room and that the external door was open. “Diana?”

She frowned as she heard the sound of a large ruckus outside. Instinctively glancing at the coordinates and atmospheric conditions, she walked towards the door and peeked outside. She froze for a moment, and then slowly eased her way out.

Romana stared at the destruction around her: the scorch marks in the sidewalk, the dented cars that were parked haphazardly along the oddly empty street, the smoldering bushes, the bent lamppost. A scream of pain drew her attention the right, and a look of surprise crossed her face as she realized that she had found the cause of the commotion. “K-9?”

“Take that, you maniacal beast!” a teenager with long blonde hair cried as she threw a spin kick into the robotic dog's side. “Aahhhhh... Ow! Ow! Ow! Owie!!” She began to hop around, holding her sore foot

“It is mechanical, not maniacal,” another teenager with short blue hair corrected as she poked at a handheld computer.

“Minako-chan, are you all right?” a girl with long blonde pigtails cried anxiously at the same time as she helped a wide-eyed Nadeshiko up from the ground.

“I say it's both,” a brunette with long, flowing, raven locks growled as she poked at K-9 with a stick to distract it from the hopping blonde.

“There is nothing insane about it,” the blue haired girl said calmly as she glanced up at her friend. “It's just following its programming.”

“If you say so, Hasuko-chan...,” Nadeshiko replied, her voice trailing off doubtfully as she carefully pushed the girl with the blonde pigtails behind her. Diana leapt in front of both girls defensively, hissing at the robotic dog. K-9 ignored her and snapped at the dark haired girl's stick.

“K-9!” Romana called as her dog's mechanical jaws shattered the stick into several small pieces. “K-9, heel! Heel, boy! K-9!”

“Watch out, Rei-chan!” the blue haired girl called as she lowered her computer to her side and dove for the raven haired girl. She knocked her friend away just in time to avoid a sputtering streak from K-9's laser.

“I thought we broke that,” Minako grumbled as she dropped her foot back to the ground and glared at the robotic dog.

“K-9! Come here. K-9!” Romana reached into the pocket of her jacket and began to search frantically for her whistle. She had not needed it in decades, but she was certain that it was in her jacket somewhere.

“It must have regenerative capabilities,” the blue haired girl panted in reply.

“Well, let's see it regenerate from this,” the taller brunette growled as she stalked towards K-9. “Take that!” she exclaimed as she poked it right between the eyes. There was a bright flash, and then K-9 flew backwards several meters.

Romana paused, her sonic whistle at her lips. “K-9!” she cried anxiously as she began to run.

The mechanical dog wiggled its ears and thumped its mechanical tail twice against the ground. “Mis... tress...” Then, it sparked and laid still.

“No! K-9!”

“Ooops...” Makoto said as she slowly lowered her arm. “Um... Was that thing yours?”

“K-9?” Carefully, Romana gathered the robotic dog's head into her lap and caressed its face.

Ami kelt beside her, tapping at her computer once more. “Don't worry,” she said softly. “It looks like its overload circuits worked properly. It just blew a few fuses.” Romana nodded as she opened a panel in K-9's chest and saw the damage herself.

“What? Mako-chan didn't fuse it into a useless lump?” Minako asked as she and the other girls gathered around curiously.

“No,” Ami replied with a smile as she looked up at them. “She just knocked it out for a little while.”

“Wow...,” Usagi said, her eyes wide. “That's some dog...”

“One of a kind,” Romana replied proudly as she patted K-9's side. “Well, fourth of his kind,” she added with a wry smile. She carefully slid its head off her lap and stood up to walk around it.

“You mean there's more?!” Diana squeaked as she cringed closer to Nadeshiko who had picked her up and was cradling her.

Romana flashed her a smile as she tried to slip her hands under K-9's belly. “Somewhere out there in the universe.”

“Here, let me,” Makoto offered as Diana moaned and tried to bury her head between Nadeshiko's arm and body. Moving carefully but easily, the strong senshi lifted the mechanical dog up from the sidewalk. “Where would you like him?”

“Over here, please,” Romana answered as she stood and led the way back to the TARDIS.

“In the phone booth?” Minako and Usagi chorused as they trailed along behind.

“Oh, it's not just a phone booth. What is a phone booth?” Nadeshiko asked curiously as she walked behind them. Beside her, Ami and Rei gave her disbelieving looks.

“Do you feel alright, ChibiUsa-chan?” Ami asked worriedly as she lifted a hand to brush the pink haired teenager's bangs away from her face. Nadeshiko drew back and gave the blue haired girl an uncertain look.

“Did you fall and hit your head or something?” Rei asked with a frown.

“I'll take him now,” Romana said with a smile as she reached for K-9. “Nadeshiko-chan? Diana? Are you coming?”

“Um...” Nadeshiko replied as she looked around at the other girls.

“Nadeshiko-chan? Who's that?” Usagi asked as she looked around curiously. “Another dog?”

“Where's your car?” Makoto asked curiously as she twisted her head from side to side. “I'll put him in for you.”

Romana shook her head as she tried to lift the robotic dog out of the tall teenager's arms. “No, really, my toolkit is right here. I'll just take care of him now.”

Makoto started to protest, and then stopped as Rei, Minako, and Nadeshiko suddenly turned and looked to the right. Ami saw the sudden movement also, and raised her computer with a frown. “Okay,” Makoto said reluctantly as she let the strange woman take the weight of the robot. She held on a moment longer as Romana staggered, and then helped her lower the dog to the ground.

“It was so nice to meet you,” Ami said with a quick bow as she snapped her computer shut and gave her friends a meaningful look. She smiled at Romana politely. “Unfortunately, we really must be going now. We will be late for our cram school session. We are very sorry for the inconvenience we have put you through.” Her blue eyes fell to K-9 and looked wistful for a moment.

“Cram school?” Usagi cried, clearly taken aback.

“Yeah, come on Usagi-chan,” Makoto replied as she reached out to snag her princess' hand. “It was nice to meet you, Ma'am. I hope your dog is better soon!” She sketched a quick bow, and then pulled Usagi after Rei and Minako who were already hurrying from the scene.

Romana blinked and watched the teenagers flee for a moment, and then shrugged and turned her attention to K-9. “Let's see if we can find those fuses, hmm?” she asked as she patted his head. “Diana...” Her voice trailed off as she realized that the grey cat was not by her side. Instead, the Mauan was bounding after her pink haired 'Lady-sama' who was following after the other girls. The Time Lord tilted her head, and then smiled, rose, and went into her TARDIS to find the parts for herself.
