Canon, spelling, grammar, and punctuation corrections are appreciated. So is constructive criticism and general comments. Please let me know if you see something that you like or that should be corrected. Thanks! - Raya
Like Cats and Dogs - I
“What about that?”
Diana looked intently at the flashing lights next to the oscillating column in the middle of the console, and then shook her head.
“No, not that one either.”
Deep in the heart of the TARDIS, Romana ran an irritated hand through her long, greying blonde hair and glared at the TASTF module in the wall in front of her. She had been so certain that this was the source of the problem. After two hours of fruitless troubleshooting, however, she was ready to admit defeat.
There was one thing she had not tried yet, a technique that she had learned from a former mentor that had always seemed to fix things for him. Although she had never really understood how it worked, desperate times called for desperate measures. Besides, it would make her feel good. So, with great relish, she smacked the panel beside the module hard with her fist.
The reaction was immediate and forceful. Romana flew across the hallway and slammed into the other wall before sinking stunned to the floor. In the library, Nadeshiko covered her head with a cry of surprise as books tumbled down around her. And in the control room, Diana scrambled for purchase on the console before she fell to the ground and skidded across the room. With one final wheeze, the central column stopped oscillating. All was quiet for a second, and then something sparked and arced in the control console.
Diana was still shaking her head and getting groggily to her feet when she heard an unusual noise. It was pneumatic sounding, but different than that of the normal column oscillation sound. It was more like a robotic whir, and it ended with a metallic thump. That could not be a good thing. She looked up at the control console fearfully, expecting to see the central column bent and broken.
“Mis-tress?” a mechanical voice said from somewhere close by. Diana jumped and spun around to look about the control room. There, a short distance away, was what appeared to be a robotic dog.
“Mis-tress?” the dog said again as it looked around the room. It spied Diana, waggled its mechanical ears, and lowered its head. “You are not the Mistress,” it said as its eyes took on a reddish hue. “Intruder. Intruder.”
Diana cringed away as a barking noise began to sound underneath its words. “Who are you?” she demanded shakily, and then cried with fear as a laser beam scorched the ground next to her. “Stop that!”
She leapt to the top of the control console, and then cried out again when another laser shot almost scorched her foot. “Stop it you silly creature!”
“Intruder. Intruder,” it barked at her in reply.
“I most certainly am not,” she replied tartly. “Stop! You'll destroy the console!” She leapt to the top of the now silent column in the center of the console, and arched her back defensively, her fur puffed out so much that she doubled in size. “Stop it, I said!” she hissed.
The robotic dog ignored her demands and fired several more lasers towards her. Finally, in a desperate attempt to get the destructive creature away from all of the fragile electronic equipment, she jumped back to the floor and raced for the external door which had opened slightly. The robotic dog paced after her.
