Hidden Moon: Africa (Part 7 - )
Nana crouched in the dry grass and peered over Shishi’s golden shoulder. The lion blinked in the bright, early afternoon sunlight and twitched his tail lazily. The appearance was deceptive, though. Under her small tanned fingers, she could feel the coiled tension in his muscles.

The twelve year old frowned and stared irritably at the sight in front of them. Somehow, Donovan had gotten here ahead of them. The thought made her pause, and the irritation became a spurt of fear. Did he know? Had he somehow discovered that Halifu was here? Her dark eyes scanned the small throng of children in front of the tent, looking for the scrawny ten year old that she had claimed as her little brother.

A sudden movement caught her eye, and she watched as the light skinned man who had been standing protectively in front of the children suddenly fell. From Donovan's stance, she knew that her head captor had just hit the man in the jaw with his gun.

The group of children began to scream and race about looking for cover. Nana bit her lower lip indecisively. If Halifu was down there, she had to save him. If he wasn't, though, she could be caught for no reason. She had just finally managed to slip away from them for good. She did not want to get caught and have her mind played with any more, especially by Donovan.

But... What if it wasn't Halifu that Donovan was searching for? What if it was her? What if he had managed to trace her enough to know that she was close by? The girl's dark fingers clenched and released restlessly in the lion's mane as she tried to determine what to do.

When Donovan's men began to destroy the tents and attack the children, she rose to her feet and took a step towards the encampment. 'Will you go, Kibibi?' Shishi's dry voice in her mind made her stop instantly. He flipped his tail negligently again as he looked up at her and continued. 'Do we hunt hyenas?'

Nana bit her lip again and shifted restlessly on her feet. As she watched one of the women in Donovan's group throw a small child into a tent wall, her face hardened and she stilled. “Yes. We hunt hyenas. Be wary of their guns,” she answered him.

Shishi did not bother to even snort at that comment as he rose ponderously to his feet. Around them, a younger lion and two lionesses rose as well. Silently, the group began to lope towards the encampment.

Souichi wrestled with one of the invaders, desperately trying to protect the small medicine cabinet behind him. He wished desperately that the doctor and his two armed sons were here, or even better yet, that Super Sailor Saturn would return and aid them, but he feared that he was on his own in this loosing battle.

The sound of an anguished cry of pain made both combatants freeze for a moment. And then, a child screamed in terror. “Lion! Lion!” another child cried, his words barely distinguishable over the first child's screams. Souichi and his opponent looked at each other, and then resumed their struggle each with a wary eye out for the rumored cat.

Outside the tent, Donovan looked around angrily. 'Lions? Attacking a camp in broad daylight? Impossible,' he thought to himself as he reached out to snag one of his subordinates. “Have you found her yet?” he asked impatiently.

“Lion! There's a lion!” Carlos babbled anxiously. Donovan frowned fiercely and shook him roughly. “Nonsense. It's just a trick. What about the girl? Did. you. find. the. girl?” He emphasized each word with another shake as the man continued to stare blankly at him.

“Girl? Nana? No... Not yet...” he finally replied faintly. “A trick? Are you sure?”

“Of course, you fool. Lions won't come into a human encampment in the daytime,” Donovan bit out in reply as he shoved the man away. “Round up all those brats and get them seated by the jeep,” he ordered. Carlos straightened with a nod and went to grab the nearest child. Donovan bellowed out his order to the rest of his force, and reached for a young, teenage girl for himself.

“Silent Wall!”

He stared in surprise as his hand suddenly bounced off of thin air. The girl looked over his shoulder, and then smiled widely in relief. “Nurse-lady!” Slowly, holding on to his temper, he turned around.

Across the compound he saw a small Asian woman dressed in an odd outfit. Her short raven hair and even shorter purple miniskirt rustled in the wind as she pointed a long polearm weapon at him. “Leave her alone,” the woman said coldly. Even though her voice was soft, it carried quite clearly to him.

Donovan sneered at her, and then turned towards the girl again, only to find her gone. Undaunted, he grabbed another child, put the barrel of his rifle to the boy's head, and turned to stare at the woman. His defiant words died on his lips when he found her standing right beside him. The blades of her weapon poked him under the chin in a silent demand. Slowly, he let the boy go. After another poke, he dropped his gun.

He was not defeated yet, though. Oh no. He kept his smirk firmly in place, and let it grow wider when she narrowed her eyes and studied him closely. Moving stealthily so as not to attract her attention, he worked his beaded bracelet down into is hand, and then broke it. The sound of falling beads distracted the woman, giving him time to step out with one foot and crush the dried bones into a powder.

Super Sailor Saturn's eyes widened slightly and she drew back sharply as a dark magenta mist began to rise from the ground where the man had been standing. He laughed, the barking sound almost sounding like a hyena or a jackal, and stepped further away. He drew a necklace of the bone beads over his head and held it between his palms. “What say you?” he asked triumphantly. “Should I break a few more?”

The senshi glanced at him, but quickly returned her attention to the mist. There was something darkly unnatural about it. It was filled with negativity.

As she watched, sections of it began to billow up into pillars, and then solidify into people. Not whole, healthy warriors, but people of all ages, races, gender, and states of decay. It was as if he had opened a graveyard and made all of the corpses come to life. The senshi drew back even more as one of the creatures turned to look at her with blank, soulless eyes.

Slowly, it shuffled towards Super Sailor Saturn, and she instinctively brought her glaive around into defensive position. She continued to stare at the thing in front of her, horrified, until a scream jerked her attention to the right. As soon as she saw one of the soulless creatures attacking six year old Lulu, she began to run to the girl's aid. A roar and a wet sounding crunch stopped her though, and she stared at the lioness in surprise. It gave her a disgusted look with its golden eyes, shook its paws fastidiously, and then began bounding away to rescue another child.

Suddenly remembering the monster that had targeted her, Super Sailor Saturn spun around, her glaive whistling through the air. The pole caught the creature in the neck just before its grasping hands could reach her and threw it to the ground. From the corner of her eye, she watched the creature that the lioness had crushed rise impossibly from the ground.

Hiding on the edge of the encampment, Nana gripped her hands and stared in horror at the zombies that Donovan had summoned. They were worse than demons; they were abominations. People should not be forced to suffer such a terrible fate after they were dead. It was not right! She gasped as one of them grabbed a teenaged boy and tried to literally pull him apart. Fortunately, Simba got there before the boy was seriously harmed.

There was a way to defeat these creatures. She knew it. She raised her fists to her head and began to beat it, trying to make the memory come free. Something about their eyes. Their blank, soulless eyes.

Donovan frowned as he watched the lions and the Asian woman mow down his zombies. Although the creatures and their severed body parts were still moving, the defenders had quickly learned to chop the zombies up into useless pieces. He still had his necklace and another bracelet, but he hated to waste the magic needlessly. It would not be easy to replace them. Still...

He began to crumble the bones of the necklace between his palms. The zombies contained in the necklace should be enough. There were lots of bones to use. Eventually, the sheer number would have to wear down the defenders.
