Super Sailor Saturn looked cautiously around the river valley, and then knelt and turned her attention to the rock and sand. Rock remembered. If her princess or the evil that had kidnapped her had passed this way, the earth would know and would tell her.
Her face saddened a little as she read the fear and pain of a recent rape. Someone had strayed too far looking for firewood again and had been caught by the lawless men that roamed this turbulent border. Fortunately, nothing in the aura reminded her of ChibiUsa.
She pressed beyond that aura of violence, seeking others. When she found nothing relevant down to the depth of half a meter, she turned her awareness and let it spread slowly away from her in a radial fashion.
Mamoru was much better at this than she was. He could have read half of the visible countryside in the time it took her to penetrate down that half meter. Regardless, it was the best method she had for tracking her missing princess and she went as quickly as she could.
She frowned as the flavor of the rock changed. Something sacred had touched it recently, something blessed with the power of the moon. Super Sailor Saturn turned her focus in that direction, her frown deepening. Just spots. Something that was not quite right for footsteps, yet resembled them closely.
She flinched as one of the spots was suddenly smothered by an aura of fear and desperation. Quickly drawing her attention upwards slightly, the senshi realized that there was someone running frantically towards her. The person was following the trail of the sacred aura. No, whatever was creating the sacred aura was leading the frightened person. Her face suddenly became a smooth mask as she felt the smug auras of petty evil that followed the frightened person. Slowly, she opened her eyes and stood up.
Super Sailor Saturn turned in the direction of the approaching auras, still feeling them through her lingering connection to the sunbaked earth. She squinted slightly, and finally spotted a small child racing in her direction. Behind it, two armed men loped with an easy, ground eating pace. Obviously, they planned to let the child run itself until it collapsed with exhaustion before they attacked it.
Her eyes narrowed slightly as her mind raced to determine the best course of action. Just as the senshi decided to move towards them, a faint movement caught her violet-grey gaze. She blinked in surprise when she finally spotted the semi-transparent gazelle that bounded between her and the child.
The gazelle increased its speed, and then came to a stop in front of the startled senshi. Super Sailor Saturn stared in breathless shock as with a faint shimmer of light the creature transformed into a beautiful young woman. She had just enough time to recognize the distinctive hair style, the flowing white tresses, and the familiar heart shaped face before the woman faded away. She is close, Queen Serenity's voice whispered in the senshi's mind as she stared mutely in front of her. This child is hers. Protect him, and you will find her.
“Nurse-lady!” a small voice called, startling her out of her shock. Quickly, she raced to meet it.
“Halifu?” she asked in surprise when they reached each others side.
“They... They are attacking the... the hospital!” the scrawny African boy gasped out as he moved to stand behind her.
The senshi's face hardened again as she looked at the two men who had stopped in front of her. “Well, hello there, doll,” the caucasian one said as he smiled at her. “What's a pretty thing like you doing all the way out here all by yourself?” Beside him, his negro partner grinned.
Without a thought, she lifted her hand and summoned her glaive. Their eyes widened and they retreated a few steps as she spun it expertly through a flashy pattern in front of her and then pointed it at the man who had spoken.
“Whoa-hoa-hoa,” he called, lifting his hands into the air. “Now that's hardly nice of you.” They eyed each other for a long moment, and then moved as one. Smoothly, Super Sailor Saturn snagged his gun out of his hand as soon as its barrel cleared its holster and tossed it out into the surrounding brush. Continuing the sweeping movement, she spun the twin blades back around and sheared off the end of his partner's pistol before the man could do more than aim it at her.
The two men stared at the sheared barrel with a dumbfounded expression for several heartbeats, and then slowly backed away from her. Smoothly, she took a long step towards them. That was all the incentive they needed to turn and run back in the direction that they had come from.
