We are riding...

In Honor of those who have survived,
In Memory of those who have not, and
In Hope of those who will.

The 16th Annual Ride For Roswell will be taking place on Saturday, June 25 this year. The Ride is a big fund raising effort for our local cancer research center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI).

Last year, I raised $180 for Roswell. (The minimum funds raised to participate in the Ride is $150) This year, I set a much more aggressive goal: $500. I wasn't sure I would make that even though I started collecting early, but I thought I should get a little more ambitious.

Today, I reached $505 in pledges. $505!! Of that $505, I have $490 in hand. A friend still owes me a little more because she didn't have the cash on her at the time. But, I'll put it in if she forgets, so let's just say that I have exceeded my wildest dreams and have collected more than $500 for this worthy cause. And if I can snare two more people who said they would but haven't made pledges yet, I might go 10% over. Whooo!

So, what shall I do to celebrate? I thought about matching the funds out of my savings account. That would put me over the $1000 minimum funds raised limit to join the Extra Mile Club. I could get a cool jersey! But, hahaha, J says that is an aweful lot to pay for a jersey, and I guess he's right. And the more I think about it, the more it seems kinda like a cheat. I didn't really earn that jersey if half the funds came from me. So, now I'm back to deciding, what to do to celebrate?

^-^ This year, I will be riding either the 44 mile loop or the 62.5 mile loop depending on the weather that morning and how I feel. I did the 44 last year, and it wasn't too bad. Just about right, actually. Ah, but that 62.5 does tempt me so. And the allure of the 100 mile ride isn't fading either, but I'm not so silly to attempt that with the bike I have, hahaha. It's a hybrid with mountain bike (thick and nubby) tires. I'd need road bike tires at least to seriously consider that one.

On Sunday, I rode 51.2 miles. It about killed me because I didn't eat properly before or drink enough during, but I finished it. I'm going to try to do at least one more really long ride before the Ride to see if I can make 62 miles. And then, I can make a better decision the morning of the Ride. We'll have to see if the weather cooperates though, hahaha. It's been very wet this spring.

Okay, back to work for me. If you feel inspired to make a donation to cancer research, send me a message and I'll send you my link. Every little bit helps!

I am riding... in honor of J's father who fought prostate cancer with surgery and won, in honor of J's uncle who is fighting prostate cancer with chemotherapy and losing (it's now in his bones), and in honor of my uncle who is fighting prostate cancer with surgery and medication. I am riding in memory of another uncle's daughter who fought breast cancer and lost. And I am riding in hope of my brother and others who smoke who might one day need to fight off lung cancer, and in hope of all my relatives who may one day need to battle skin cancer. On June 25, I will ride for all of these and more.
