Watchmen Drabble #3

Here's another little drabble I did in class yesterday. It's only a short little piece, but amused my boredom in a 3 hour discussion class.

Title: Practical Use
Rating: PG
Characters: Adrian Veidt
Disclaimer: I own none of the characters. All Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons work!
Summary: Prompt - Plushie

"And these are what you had in mind for new development?” Adrian asked as he leaned against his desk, the object of the conversation in his hands. He turned it over inspecting the lines that ran through the blended material of flesh, clothing, and hair.

“Well, yes. There have been warnings from other companies that there may be hazardous components or materials that other toy companies are finding. Such as M-,”

“I understand. I’ve read the reports as well, Mr. Benieux,” Adrian said, interrupting passively. “What I’m trying to ask is if you really think these are the answer to the marketing drop? Will more toys really fix that?” he asked making his point of view clearer for the others. Mr. Benieux stood in front of Adrian, looked at the item in Adrian’s hand before glancing back up to his employer’s questioning look.

“Um….maybe not,” he said, clearing his throat as Adrian smiled and shook his head.

“I’m not trying to dismiss your ideas, but perhaps expand on the logic that the media uses in certain times,” Adrian said as he pushed himself away from the desk, walking slowly through the group of employees who stepped aside as he approached, moving towards the other end of the office. “I’m suggesting a more practical tactic.”

“Like zoning in on the practical needs,” another representative asked. Adrian nodded.

“Exactly. Times of distress, even in the slightest way, people will still lean towards practical and personal uses,” Adrian explained as he pushed open the large carved doors of his office. Stepping to the side he waited for the men and women to follow and pass by him in exit.

“So look towards cosmetics, clothes, is what you’re thinking?” Mr. Benieux asked watching as Adrian inclined his head in agreement. The look in the group’s face seemed to brighten as if an epiphany had fallen over them.

“I think we understand now. We’ll get to work on another report for you; a week as usual,” Mr. Benieux said smiling.

“Very good then; Ladies, gentlemen, good day,” Adrian said watching the group step towards the elevator and disappear behind the closing doors, before stepping back inside his office. He waited for the doors to close behind him before looking down to the item in his hands, the plushie of his alter-ego staring back with large eyes covered by a mask. Smirking, he looked up.

“Bubastis,” he called out hearing the couch to the side move slightly against the stone floor. From behind it, the large enhanced lynx pawed out from her resting place. She moved towards Adrian, sniffing the ground that the employees had been standing, their scents still lingering. Looking back up, her sharp yellow eyes focused and followed as Adrian tossed the plushie in the air towards Bubastis. She didn’t move as she caught the toy in her mouth; Adrian’s accuracy was perfect. Bubastis chewed on it a few times, the material breaking around her sharp teeth, before she dropped it to the ground. Adrian watched on, observing her reactions as she stared down at it.

“You agree too,” Adrian said shaking his head, moving back to his desk leaving Bubastis to entertain herself. The feline watched him for a moment before looking back down at the plushie. She seemed to ponder over the object for another few moments, her head cocked and tail twitching before leaning back down, pawing at it as if to test its reaction. It didn’t take long before the sound of soft growls caused Adrian to look up from his papers. He watched Bubastis swat the toy only to pounce on it and chew it happily. Smirking at her antics, Adrian thought that at least it had one practical use.
