washing out my head

As a composer, I'm a sound sponge. I soak up every sound I encounter.

Unfortunately, I'm constantly subjected to music I don't want to hear. Sooner or later, I need to listen to something--usually something very screechy--to "wash out" my brain.

Today, while working on organizing my CDs out of their jewel boxes and into nice binder-thingys, I ran across the CD of Glenn Branca's Symphony No. 6 (Devil Choirs at the Gates of Heaven). While it's not exactly screechy, it is incredibly in your face and relies on so much acoustical effect (generated by massive amplification, microtonal tunings and more...) that at the very bedrock of its composition, it's totally a brain-washer. In fact, it's sort of the aural equivalent of a pan-galactic garble blaster, the most delicious and dangerous cocktail in the galaxy, the effects of which are reputed to be like having your brain smashed out by a gold brick with a twist of lemon.

Just what the soul doctor ordered to get me back on track as a musician. I feel like i just put a magnetic bulk-eraser up to my inner ear and blanked out years worth of crap. I'm lovin' it!
