Q1: Why is there Ladies Parking but not Men Parking?

Oct 01, 2015 11:33

Malls in our city usually have woman-only parking space. What's so special about it is that it's located closest to the mall's entrance. Awesome right? Finding parking can be very troublesome, especially when you have two kids at the backseat whining about being bored and screaming 'why is it taking so loooong???' every five minutes. Getting the kids out of the car is even more of a chore, especially when it's just you and the kids. Cos your eldest daughter might suddenly run off in front of a passing car while you're trying to get your baby out of the carseat. So Ladies Parking can be quite the lifesaver. Which is why during weekends when the malls are usually very crowded, I would sometimes do the driving instead of my husband just so that we can park at the Ladies Parking space.

Of course, after multiple 'Yay, we found and empty spot at the Ladies Parking!!' from my part, my daughter started to take notice. What is Ladies Parking? Then comes the ultimate 'Why is there Ladies Parking but not Men Parking?'. Uh oh...

While I was doing the 'hmmmm....' trying to find a good answer to that, my husband said 'Because women are weaker than men??'. Whattt????? You can't say that? I'm not a feminist, but saying that to your daughter will make her think that she shouldn't try as hard as boys because she's weaker, wouldn't it?

Then, I told my daughter 'I think it's because sometimes women bring their kids. And when you travel with kids, it will be a lot safer and easier if we park near the entrance. Parking lots are quite dangerous because there are lots of cars moving around and most of the times the drivers are not looking straight ahead because they're looking for a parking space. So if the ladies can get their kids to the entrance quickly before the kids run off in front of a car, wouldn't that be a lot safer?'.

But then my daughter said 'But sometimes men bring their kids also!'. Damn, I forgot about that. I then stupidly said 'But men don't travel with their kids as often'. Hahaha, sorry, I was desperate. Luckily she was suddenly distracted by a funny shaped balloon so I had quite a few minutes to think of a better answer.

Then suddenly, Aha! I got it! 'I know why! Because women can get pregnant and men can't. Pregnant women are carrying a child in their tummy and their stamina and balance aren't as good as non pregnant women. That's why they need to be closer to the entrance so that they won't have to walk to far and risk being too tired and injuring the baby in her belly!'. I know, that's not really a got answer. But my daughter didn't really have anything to counter argue with that. She still wasn't satisfied though.

Then we started discussing whether or not Ladies parking is really necessary. We all thought that it's not and finally came to the conclusion that instead of Ladies Parking, malls should have 'Family with kids under five years old Parking' instead.

But of course, even after that conclusion my daughter asked again 'Then why did the mall make Ladies Parking? Why are they wrong??'. I then distracted her by singing 'Let it Go'.
