To almost plagarize Karl (orientation leader and asuw director of oporations or something): A contest is underway. I've been saying I'd like to see this campus become even more political and maybe this contest could be the catalyst we need ... Read more... )

i don't mean to sound snobish or pompus, but why is it that whenever people (escpecialy young people) get political, they always talk as if everyone else knows what they are talking about? they just skip over the premise and go strait to the emotional editorial garbage.

ie: why arn't the young conservatives fighting their own war?

seriously. what the fuck does that mean?

my problem with the yellow elephant is that it's a left wing operation not-so-cleverly-disguised as a public service to get young people to vote. obviously, it's to swindle young people into the democratic party.

not that there is anything WRONG with the left wing agenda.

the most obvious problem with yellow elephant is that it implies chicken shit republicans. last time i checked, the young republicans of america are not going to college. they're in the millitary, risking their lives for our freedom of speech.

in my humble opinion, young people of america are not under-informed. we have almost too much information available on the issue of politics. the problem is, it's all contradictory information. it's hard to tell the difference between what's right and wrong.

it's all over exagerated like my "they're dying for our right of free speech" statement.

republican = nazi!
liberal = freedom!

Ah, my friend, I think you gravely misunderstand OYE. Your statement that Young Republicans are not in the military is clearly counter-factual; one needs only to step onto a college campus to find Young Republican clubs overflowing with members advocating war. The problem lies in the fact that many of these chickenhawks don't realize that their advocating for war means that tens of thousands of people must die.

Clearly, the beef is not with those who sign up. Clearly. It's with those who enjoy a privileged lifestyle that precludes their joining the military and putting their lives on the line and yet DEMAND that others do so.

Are there legitimate reasons for not joining the military? Of course. The point here is to remind them of the sacrifice they're demanding from others and ask: "Would you be willing to take it yourself? If not, why not?" That should provoke a good deal of self-reflection, but predicatbly we see only defensiveness and anger.

true, not all republicans join the millitary. and not all in the millitary are republicans. for instance, i did my time in the millitary and i'm not republican. but there are enough republicans in the millitary that you can't go around calling them yellow.

everyone always enjoys an anti-war protest. thousands of people will die in the war. but have you considered that thousands more would die, had we not engaged in the war?

i know for a fact that there is mounds and mounds of terrorist activity that you and i never hear about. there are attacks made on americans every day and it's kept under raps to ensure our "sense of security" on the homefront.

i don't know what they are, but i know they exist.

To the first point, perhaps we agree then - not all Republicans are the targets of OYE. Clearly. I hope no one is under that impression. The term "chickenhawk" and "Yellow Elephant" have more narrow definitions than all that ( ... )

true, iraq and al quida were bitter enemies in the 80s but things change. escpecialy with a common enemy as great at the united states!

most of all, i hate it when people use terms like good and evil when talking about polotics. foreign affairs is not like saturday morning cartoons where it's the good guys against the bad guys.

will anybody ever experience more or less freedom thru war? or maybe it's just different.

i admit, i'm not as sharp about my polotics as you college kids but i try. mostly, i only know what i've seen on my tour thru the persian gulf and what i've heard from my friends in inteligence. it isn't much, but i would argue that it's more truthful than anything you'd see in the news.

or something.
