18th Century Hair & Wig Styling

Aug 16, 2014 20:36

Usually I leave the book reviews to my friend Jackie at Literary Escapism, but not today! 18th Century Hair & Wig Styling, History & Step-by-Step Techniques. by Kendra VanCleave This book showed up on my doorstep just before the flooding started this week, so I really didn’t get a chance to go completely fan-girl over it until now. Yes, I pre-ordered 18th Century Hair & Wig Styling, so I had some expectations. Kendra did more than I dreamed. Instead of just showing the basics of how to make an 18th century style wig, she made a full on reference book. There are several sections, the first explains the book and layout including an Index. The second (Part I) is the historical section where she not only has some reference images (many more than I expected), but also descriptions from source material. Part II is a section on tips and techniques, both modern and period, but presented in a way that a modern person could attempt. Part III is called “Finished Styles”. There is an image of a finished style, with a name for it, and the date range when it would have been popular. Talk about making it easy! I can pick a style I want to do to go with an outfit, and go at it. There are step by step instructions with full color images. This includes a few men’s styles!

THERE IS A SECTION ON HOW TO MAKE A WIG WITH A SHIP IN IT!

How much cooler can you get?

If you want period style hair to go with your 18th century outfit, then I suggest you get yourself a copy of this book. I’m going to be absorbing it for the next few weeks while my arm recovers from “Mopping Elbow”.
