summer is my hibernation season

Things I've been doing:
-Reading a lot. Finished Mieville's newest, Kraken, and it was awesome and hilarious and romp-like. :D A nice break from the direness of his other work, but not at all lacking in the weird factor.

-Art. I offered to do a guest storyline for kiyou_hime's webcomic specialfleet, so I've been drawing comics as well as doodling loads of character portraits and outtakes. I'll post a big bundle of them once they're scanned and sent to Kiyou. I'm having fun using one particular process right now, but it is awfully time-consuming. I do a rough sketch with HB or 2H pencil, polish the linework with 2B, ink it, then color with watered acrylics and small-gauge round brushes. Then editing and lettering in Photoshop, of course. I have two strips left.

-Craft work. Loads of cross-stitching, which I do while watching TV, but I've actually sprung my wrist out right now from the repetitive stitching motion so no more of that for a while. Also been getting back on the doll recon thing, especially making the Sokka doll I promised kiyou_hime AGES ago. It is going to have to count for so many holidays that have passed, IDEK. -_-;

I have a crazy idea for making a Link (Zelda) recon. I have a blond Ken whose hair doesn't even need work, and who is super-articulated. Like, he could sit on an appropriately sized toy horse, if I could find a good Epona-ish horse. And I'm playing with a frighteningly tiny and tedious plan to make Barbie-sized chain mail.

Yeah. This is what I do with my B.A. in English. Hah.

-Getting a driver's license. Yes, it happened. I've even driven a sum total of 10 minutes without anyone else in the car. Also: buying a car. It's a red 2008 Toyota Yaris. I quite like it. :D

-Job-hunting. In the laziest way possible. I'm sitting on a tidy amount left over from refund checks, but I have car payments now and need to get on this.

-Grad school-hunting. I do intend to go if at all possible, but I'm still swinging all over the place as far as what I want to do. I've gone from museum science to history/archive science to art conservation to library science to creative writing to pop culture/digital culture studies. That last is where I think I may be settling. There are a few good programs out there. Bowling Green State University in Ohio looks really appealing.

I wish I had a knockout idea for a 3-year research project and a really amazing proposal drafted so that I could grab up one of City University London's 35 student researchships: full tuition waiver, 14K pound annual bursary and another stipend for living expenses. Ugh, it sounds amazing. They only really want science and medical researchers, though. D:

-Not as much writing as I would like. I'm sitting on at least 3 stories that are within arm's reach of being finished, and am just not squared with them in my head. Whenever I get my shit together, you may be flooded with a 5Kish Young Wizards fic, a 15Kish Supernatural/Good Omens crossover, and two or three Avatar: TLA Zuko-centric fics salvaged from some old fiddling that was actually pretty good if I could just wrap it up. :/

-Visiting friends with the help of said new car and license. Am going to drive 45 minutes away from home tomorrow by myself for the first time ever. Will I survive? Tune in and find out.

And that's all I got. Mine is not a life of huge excitement. Walmart job application, here I come.
