I spent Friday through Tuesday in Winston-Salem, NC for work. The trip did not start out promising. The very nice Delta gate-agent informed me (with a straight face!) that one of two things were probably going to happen. 1 - I'd miss my connection in Atlanta since I only had 15 minutes to catch it; 2 - my luggage wouldn't make the transfer from one plane to another and I'd arrive before my luggage. Honestly, the second one worried me more than the first. I have a ton of stuff in my luggage! I need my luggage! How am I supposed to operate without my shoe and clothing choices? There were better flights leaving Saturday, but I'd get to the client much later than I should. So I took my original flight. Fortunately, my connection was delayed and delayed but I did not know this until I actually got to the gate. My calves hurt from walk-trot-running through the airport in flip-flops while carrying my laptop bag on my shoulder. I was out of breathe but I made it. I made a mental note to wear running shoes on the way home because I had another crazy connection.
My work-related stuff went very well. There were a few hiccups here and there, but I'm fortunate that the client is easy to work with, and the people I worked with are IT oriented. We worked a full day Saturday but didn't have to go in Sunday which was the goal. Monday was a full day for me, but I cut out at noon Tuesday so I could start driving to the airport to fly home.
I made the trip by myself, which meant that I could do whatever I wanted at night! Yay! I did not do homework until Sunday. Instead, I hung out at the
Village Tavern Saturday evening. I made friends at the bar and stayed there till 10:30 or so when my eyes started to droop and I worried that I'd fall asleep at the bar. Never a good sign. But, I did make dinner plans with one of my friends, Susan, for Sunday.
Sunday was a day for relaxation. I went to the
Midtown Cafe & Dessertery for a late lunch. I decided I needed an omelet at 2:00 in the afternoon and they serve breakfast 24/7. Hooray for omelets. Lunch naturally led to shopping. Very expensive shopping. 2 dresses, 2 shirts, new perfume, a new necklace and matching earrings later, I called it a day so I could go to dinner.
I met up with Susan (who I met the night before) at
Firebirds for dinner. We spoiled ourselves with rich food. They have this delicious lobster spinach queso dip. It was like a normal spinach dip, except it was creamier. I'm not even sure how to explain it - it was delicious. I could have asked them to send multiple plates of it, except we needed to leave room for the real dinner.
People in Winston-Salem are friendly. Very friendly. I had conversations with total strangers about nothing. In fact, I was pretty friendly myself. Tuesday morning I attempted to dodge raindrops as I ran into Starbucks. I was nearly hit by a woman opening her car door to go into Starbucks. I know it's hard to believe, but I APOLOGIZED to her for probably scaring her as she tried to open her door. Yeah, you read that right. I was friendly alright.
The flights home were as eventful as my flights out. My first flight was delayed by 40 minutes. I had about 15 minutes between flights. Fortunately, my second flight was 3 gates over. I walked off the airplane, enjoyed the Atlanta weather for about 30 seconds, and walked back down another hallway to board another plane. I probably had about 5 minutes to spare. I slept a little bit and read. A lot. All in all, it was a good trip. Especially the food and shopping. :-)
