I decided the other day that I'd spring for a month's worth of training sessions. I'd decided almost 6 months ago which trainer I wanted to work with. I've watched him interact with clients and I've liked what I've seen. He's very professional, doesn't treat you like you're stupid, and encourages you but doesn't let you slack off. He strikes me as ex-military, so he comes off as a very non-nonsense guy and also very scary. But, he's not scary crazy screaming with any of his female clients, so that works for me.
It was almost the end of the working day for the gym staff (8:00 PM) but I figured it wouldn't take too long to fill out paperwork, so I didn't care. Nick (second in command at the gym) introduces me to the manager of the training department (Andrew, Anthony, Antwan?). We shake hands, and he slams his elbow on the desk while shaking my hand. Ooops. Definitely wasn't my fault, but he said he was surprised by my grip. Okay guys, I don't have a grip of death here, but I do believe in giving a firm handshake. None of that limp, lay in your hand, lifeless handshake stuff for me. And if I was trying to act old-fashioned and lady-like, the webs between our thumbs and forefingers wouldn't be touching. Anyway...I tell him who I want to work with and he gets about 30 seconds into explaining the training packages, when the owner walks in. He tells Andrew/Anthony/Antwan to give me half hour sessions because I did have hourly sessions before, but they'll cost me about the same. Thanks Mr. Owner. I appreciate you trying to look out for me, but a) I can think for myself b) I can do basic math and c) I know what I want. Grrrr. Oh, and at one point two other people came in the office and grabbed paperwork. No apologies or anything. Maybe I'm just used to working in a professional office, but that irritated me to no end. It damn well better be an emergency if you come into someone's office while they're with a client. Anyway, Mr. Trainer-in-Charge Guy explains that they only offer training packages in 6-month or 12-month sessions. WTF? He doesn't budge on this, and while in concept that sounds awesome, it also sounds pretty damn expensive. So I say no thanks and leave.
I go to the grocery store and start shopping, and I get more pissed. Why wouldn't they take my money? What kind of company says no to extra cash? It's not like I asked them to do anything illegal. I just want to get into a regular routine. :-( Every time I think about this, I get pissed off that they won't take my money and help me. So, I'm going gym shopping. I want to find a gym that costs no more than what I'm paying now, but I'd be super happy if it costs less. They must offer group classes, because those rock. And, they must offer training classes in a variety of packages. None of this 6-month or 12-month bullshit. Look, I understand that they want to make money, but that's a long financial commitment, and I'm just not willing to make it. I'm all committed out at this point. I know what I want and I don't want them.
