Sales for Mom

I'm starting to see Mother's Day stuff everywhere. I think it's supposed to make me sadder than it does. Instead I just pause and think, "I'd never buy that for my mom." Then I start to think about what I would buy for my mom. What do you buy for a person who has everything? What do you buy for a person you don't know all that well? I mean, she's my mom. We were never best friends, and we only recently started to really share stuff with each other. And by that I mean that I told her about my life. In one sense, woman are easy to buy presents for. Get the clothes, jewelry, purses, or shoes and we'll be happy. My mom loved Karen Scott, so I'd try to get her some outfits made by her. I can't walk through that section of Macy's anymore. Not now.

If I still 'had to" buy a Mother's Day present, I'd buy some decorative paper plates with matching cups and napkins. Seriously, my mom loved this stuff. It made for easy cleanup after a meal, but they were so cute and really added a bit of flair to the table. You couldn't go wrong with them. My dad would buy her some flowers of some sort, and Stephen would offer to make part of a meal.

This year will be different. This year the kids will want to go play with their friends, who will be celebrating with their own mothers. This year our family will attend Mass together, and a few of us will start crying when they ask all the mothers to stand up for a blessing. This year will be different.

mom, family
