Goodbye, Britain (but only for now)!

Jul 24, 2008 22:17

Tomorrow morning, I’ve got a 10:25 flight from Heathrow Airport (in London) to Dallas and then from Dallas to Colorado Springs. As it usually goes with the events in my life, I have mixed feelings about it.

I’m not quite ready to leave Britain. It’s a wonderful country. The people are nice, public transportation is amazing (more on that later), the countryside is beautiful, and London is downright awesome. I can see myself living over here in a heartbeat. I would say there’s a strong possibility of me doing that for a year or two. If I get my dream job as a journalist and writer who does a lot of traveling, I’ll hopefully visit London a lot. I don’t want to go back to being entirely stationary, trapped at home. I want to travel more. Lots more. This trip has inspired me in so many ways-giving me new things to write about, new goals to aim for, and a dramatically new perspective on the world.

On the other hand, I think I’ve had enough sightseeing for the immediate future; I just feel exhausted when I consider doing more. I want to LIVE for awhile, not be a tourist. Like I said, I could certainly do that here in Britain. The quality of life seems extremely high (again, more on that later). But I’ll tell you the one thing that makes the thought of going home more bearable: My family and my uber-cute dog are in America right now. They’re like a magnet that draws me back. America is, and always will be, my home. I think of Colorado as the base I’ll always return to to after being away. For now it’s time for me to throw my lot in with other Americans, “make a difference,” and face the challenges that we urgently need to deal with. In the long-term future, there’s no reason I can’t do that and travel the world as well. But tomorrow I’ve got a flight back home.

As promised, I’ll share more of my general impressions on Britain. I need to get ready for bed right now. Adios, and I hope everybody is doing well!

The classic English phone booths! (if my Brit readers are wondering, we definitely don't have these in the States.)

No explanation needed. I'm glad I got a chance to visit this place.

The Roman baths at (where else?) Bath. I groaned out loud at the entry price--which, of course, cost me twice as much in U.S. dollars. But it was DEFINITELY worth seeing. The museum was surprisingly large.
