'Melissa' sparkling mead, from Honey Gardens Apiaries, first mentioned here a couple weeks ago. We were able to procure two bottles last weekend at the co-op.
It was not bad as beverages made with honey go...and even though it didn't fit into my definition of 'mead', it was still leaps and bounds better than any other store-bought mead I've had...which probably just means that I should stop having such high expectations for store-bought mead.
Yes, you should make blackberry wine. :) Or at least blackberry ale, if you're not into waiting a year before drinking the fruits of your labor.
I've never had mead that tasted like honey, though I agree with you, it should. I think people are afraid of it or the sugars are all converted to alcohol so the taste goes with it. ????
Gryphon's actually tastes like honey, although I like his straight mead but not so much the flavored ones...There was another good mead at camp last year, the guy was from New York but I can't remember his name. Closer to you, Alex's is pretty good but not real consistent...and I don't like his flavored meads all that much usually.
For the store-bought meads, I think a lot of it may be that they probably use cheap and relatively tasteless honey. The Melissa mead that started this conversation, though, is just purposefully dry where I prefer mead to be sweeter.

I'm thinking this summer I may have to find instructions for blackberry wine, which is only tangentially related to this topic...
