Finally...
We got electricity restored yesterday and today I got cable and internet back, but we are in the vast minority. Most people in my area are still in the dark and go outside of our little island of light and it's positively eerie. My brother is only a few blocks away from our house and he still doesn't have power so they're spending a lot of time at our house since we've got light, heat, hot water and hot food. Still haven't been able to get to work because the trains are almost all completely out of service, but maybe tomorrow...
The past few days have been rough. We had some damage to the house (lost siding and shingles from the roof), but the house is structurally sound. Our fences are solid and thankfully we had our trees pruned after Irene last year so they didn't lose any big branches. This is a marked difference from other houses where whole trees came down. There's a church a few blocks away where the steeple is hanging off the roof. So all in all, we're incredibly lucky,
Have been playing host to friends and family who still don't have power back, Several neighbors are coming over for showers and hot coffee. Plan to make a big batch of french toast so I can use up some of this bread that's starting to go stale, Tonight I'm emptying out the freezer in the garage to have a big bbq where I can feed a whole bunch of people. Am turning our house into a mini-Red Cross center.
