Her insides are hurting and not just because she knows that has done something very very stupid and potentially deathly.
She clutches the bag to her chest with one hand and scribbles with a pen across unused white paper with the other. The words are fairly blurry in front of her eyes but she is certain that Detective Cypher will be able to make sense of them eventually.
The boy looks at her with wide eyes but waits patiently for her until she is done writing. The fifty bucks, first half of his pay, in his pocket will also make sure that he is going to deliver the message just in the nick of time.
“You know what you are supposed to do?”
Kahlan folds the paper and stuffs into an envelope. The boy nods, his shaggy red hair moving along with the motion.
“Yup, you can count on me.”
She smiles briefly at him and he blushes. The envelops disappears in his backpack and he waves at her one last time before getting on his bike and riding toward the police precinct.
She knows that having a message delivered by a child is not the most clever thing in the world, but she neither has the time nor the means to get any kind of information to Cara without Dewitt’s men intervening. They are already hot on her heels and she basically feels them breathing down her neck every single second that ticks by. Good.
She needs them to follow her. In fact she needs to have everyone in one place at the same time - obviously her plan is chaotic at best, but she just couldn’t come up with something better in such a short amount of time.
And maybe, just maybe, she shouldn’t have pulled her gun on Dewitt. But it is done now and there is no going back. She has the diamonds, the Paciello’s have Jennsen and it is time to make some business.
Rahl didn’t have the time to explain everything to her but she has sorted all that shit out in her head, coming to the conclusion that it has been about the diamonds ever since the beginning. Rahl’s men stole them from Sven while she distracted him at the dinner party and she unknowingly had them in the trunk of the car which she drove to industrial district, safely getting them out of Paciello territory without drawing any attention to herself. Of course she had been the best person for the job since nobody knew anything about her, let alone about her connection to Rahl and Dewitt.
Also she isn’t entirely sure who the Paciellos really are but they are most definitely a bunch of criminals, just like Dewitt, maybe even worse. It all sounds very suspiciously like mafia or something along those lines, but Kahlan is already knee-deep in this entire shit that she isn’t keen on venturing any further into their world to find out.
Then the Paciello’s stole the diamonds back before she could hand them over to Dewitt’s men only to have Rahl return them to Dewitt in the next instant.
Many lives have been lost over those damned stones and now it is Kahlan who has them in her possession. Having those diamonds definitely seems like bad omen but she is dead set on getting out of this mess alive to make it back to Dahlia and Cara.
A few hours and a taxi cab ride later she waits impatiently for Rahl to show up. He has arranged everything concerning the exchange and only needs the diamonds to fulfill his end of the deal.
She has been standing at the corner of the deserted street for almost half an hour when, instead of one of his pitch black expensive cars, he arrives in a dirty old blue van. Shoving open the passenger door he jerks his head toward the other side.
“Get in!”
Not having to be told this twice Kahlan jumps into the vehicle and together they roar toward the warmly setting evening sun.
“You actually managed to get them?”
Rahl’s tight grip around the steering lets his knuckles stand out white in contrast to his rather tanned skin.
“I walked in there and threatened to scatter his brain all over his study. After that it was just formalities.”
“And luck.”
“That too.”
Kahlan takes a deep breath and rests the black bag on her lap. It contains everything that will most likely keep her alive over the course of the next couple of hours - the diamonds and a gun.
“So we’re going to the industrial district yes?”
“Yeah, seems like criminals have an affinity for large abandoned warehouses.”
Rahl snorts quietly and Kahlan chuckles nervously.
“Seems like it.”
There is little to talk about, both of them knowing that they might not see the sun rising the next day.
Rahl merely informs her about how the entire deal is supposed to go down, but beside exchanging diamonds for Jennsen they don’t really have a solid plan.
The warehouse they are driving towards is even further away from the city than the last one Kahlan had set foot into. There is absolutely nothing suspicious about the building but that was in fact a very bad sign.
“Tell me again why they won’t just put a few bullets into our heads and take off with the diamonds and the hostage?”
“Well they don’t know yet that we’re working without any kind of backup. I’m sure they’re not overtly interested in killing Dewitt’s employees.”
“Great, just great.”
Rahl parks the van around the corner of the warehouse and secures two guns to his belt before they get out and quickly move to a side exit hidden from view.
There is light coming from the inside and the old metal door screeches way too loudly for them to make a silent entrance.
Kahlan glares at Rahl who shrugs and pushes the door even further until they can slip inside.
“Let me do the talking,” the dark-haired man whispers.
Kahlan nods and notices for the first time that he is not like usually wearing a suit. He looks years younger in his black jeans and simple gray jacket. His hair is not slicked back and frames his prominent features instead. Now that she thinks about it, in the most unfitting moment of course, she realizes that Rahl is indeed a rather attractive man.
Kahlan crinkles her brow at her own train of thought and silently admonishes herself for getting sidetracked. Now is certainly not the time for that, live-threatening situation or not.
There are lots of huge metal shelves scattered throughout the warehouse, making Kahlan feel like she is trapped in some absurd labyrinth. She keeps on looking around, searching for places that would make for good cover should the entire thing go wrong.
Soon enough they can hear voices and upon rounding yet another large shelf they find themselves face to face with a group of men, every single one of them holding a gun or rifle.
Jennsen is struggling against the guy who keeps her arms firmly in his grasp. Her eyes are wide with fear while her hands are tied behind her back and a piece of tape seals her mouth shut.
“Let her go,” Rahl demands, authority clear in his voice.
“The diamonds first.”
The man speaking has a thick accent Kahlan can’t really place. He rakes his dark beady across them and reveals a few brown teeth when he smiles. He obviously thinks that he is the one in control.
“I’ll put them down in the middle and you let her walk over here, how about it?”
Kahlan raises her eyebrow expectantly and pulls a pouch out of her black bag. She shakes it for emphasis and takes a few steps forward when bad-teeth guy nods his assent.
She puts the pouch down onto the cold concrete floor of the warehouse and takes a few steps back.
Jennsen is shoved in her direction and she immediately wraps her arms around the quietly sobbing redhead.
“Are you okay?” she whispers into the other woman’s ear who nods her head weakly.
Rahl remains standing behind them for he needs to keep an eye on their involuntary business partners.
Holding Jennsen close to her, Kahlan carefully guides her back to stand beside Rahl while one of the men with a rifle picks up the diamonds and looks inside the pouch. He nods toward bad-teeth guy and together they turn to take a closer look at the stones.
“Get ready,” Kahlan mumbles, looking at Rahl.
“What?”
“You only make sure to get her out of here, no matter what happens, understood?”
The dark-haired man nods with his eyes wide, not knowing what exactly Kahlan means but still trusting her enough to not ask any questions.
Kahlan chances to slip her cell phone out of her pocket to check the time, hoping that no one will notice anything odd.
As if obeying to her thoughts, the noise of people running toward them can be heard in the large warehouse. It takes only moments until Dewitt himself, along with his most trusted men, appear behind them. They are armed to the teeth and in the blink of an eye she, Rahl and Jennsen find themselves in between dozens of drawn weapons.
“What is going on here?!” Dewitt booms.
Kahlan cringes. Nope she shouldn’t have pulled her gun on him.
“What do you think you are doing?”
Dewitt sneers at Rahl, anger written all over his features. It seems like he is absolutely not used to being disobeyed, least of all by his own employees.
“What is this? We’re here to make business,” the man with the thick accent complains. He nervously takes a few steps back, trying to hide behind one of his armed companions.
“C’mon already…” Kahlan hisses under her breath.
