Title: Family businesses aren't always family-friendly

Prompt: Supernatural, John, various people told him but John realized too late that they were right: you don't bring children into the hunting business
The first time he regretted what he'd done to his boys was--
Well, no. It wasn't the first time, not at all. Before this there was leaving an eight year old and four year old alone for days at a stretch, and the look in Dean's eyes when he came back, like he'd been so scared that he wouldn't. Before this there was the time fifteen-year-old Dean returned from his first solo werewolf hunt with an empty gun, and John asked how he was, and Dean said he was fine, and meant it.
Before this there were the times that Sammy would try to hide out in the Impala so he wouldn't have to start over at a new school, and the times that Dean was expelled before John even got back. There were the times that John had to instruct his sons to lie, and lie, and keep lying, for all their sakes.
But the first time he really, truly regretted what he'd done to his boys was when Sammy walked straight out that door and into the night, and John told him never to come back.
