Yes, I've heard that about the encyclopedias for "Lost" before, but I've never watched the show.
I am familiar with Star Trek, and there were all sorts of fan-written books about that show, some of them "official" and some not. I still have some of my paperback compilations of fan fiction, though. People say that will never happen with HP, but back in the 70s, after Star Trek had been off the air for about 10 years, two women fans got together and made two different complilations of the "Best of Trek," which was the name of a famous "fanzine" with stories and poems written by the fans. Those books also included essays analyzing Star Trek.
That's what's kept the Star Trek phenomenon alive, and it kept the actors interested in doing the movies because they could always go to conventions and meet the fans.
ST was cancelled in 1969, when I was 9 years old, but I was a fan years later than that in the late 70s, my nephew was a fan during the 80s, and my younger son watches it now on TV Land. Fandom doesn't "end" just because people are finished with it - LotR has been the same way - it never ends.
