This is eye-opening: J. K. Rowling considered killing off Ron Weasley in Deathly Hallows!
Entertainment Weekly Popwatch *hears boom as collective heads of Ron Fandom literally asplode*
So much for the theory that Ron was essential to Harry's victory, LOL.
ETA: I've always said that Ron reminded me of James ~ holy snitch-nicker Batman!
Considering the size of the Weasley family, it might have made more sense if more of them died.
But why couldn't it have been Ginny instead of Fred, for instance?
Just a suggestion. The "Harmony" shippers would have loved it, and as a Luna-Harry shipper, I personally would have loved it.
With Ginny out of the picture, Harry might have married someone nicer than a girl-bully who reminded him of his mother and father. And Harry would have had two geniuses to choose from instead of ending up with a professional Quidditch Player.
But anyway, back to why JKR would want to kill Ron? Besides the fact that he hated Slytherins and wasn't good enough for Hermione? And the fact that Viktor Krum might have returned to be her valiant Prince Charming?
That would have completely changed the Epilogue, right? But let's admit that Ron was basically useless at the beginning of DH anyway, when he disappeared leaving Hermione and Harry alone, which was actually a really great part of the book. Unfortunately he came back. Oh, but wait, he later redeemed himself by destroying a horcrux (2 if you count the one he destroyed with Hermione - like she needed his help, right) and speaking Parseltongue like an old master.
Perhaps she was going to have the horcrux kill him? Or maybe he would just splinch and die - that would have been nice and bloody. Or maybe the snake was going to kill him instead of attacking Harry in Godric's Hollow? Or when Bellatrix was torturing Hermione, he might have tried to save her, then "Avada!" ~ he's gone?
Oh, the possibilities!!!
