Snape Fans on Cloud 9

As several of us here predicted last week, there are millions more Snape fans now than before Deathly Hallows opened worldwide. It's really awe-inspiring. I keep asking myself: "Is this my Fandom?" We've never felt as if we had the world on our side before, or even that the movie-makers had anything to say to us. Even people prepared to hate ( Read more... )

People are less likely to think of "Severus Snape" and "greasy git" in the same sentence any longer

Which is kind of amusing since "greasy git" itself is entirely fanon (I'm curious where and when it arose). The word "greasy" is used several times (mostly for his hair although once for the skin of his temple) and he's referred to as a "git" in a couple of instances, but not even Sirius utters this phrase together. (Ditto "dungeon bat", "greasy bat of the dungeons" etc. The pieces are there, but the specific phrasing is fanon.)

I have known people who don't cry during movies and didn't like Snape very much, yet who fell apart and became a fan from this movie.

That's kind of how the DH book was for me. I mean, I did like Severus. He was my favorite character, it was just very casual. Then after DH, I fell really hard. So if someone was not into the books I can see how they might have had a similar experience.

Theories are being revisited, such as how Snape's hair in the 6th and 7th ones (films and books) is a bit like Harry's; it's a tad messier.

Er... odd. I think the best "Harry hair" in the films was around the third one... it was the best compromise of color and style. (GoF was certainly messy, but for me it was too much.) I know Dan's eyes aren't green because he couldn't tolerate contacts, but I dunno why he couldn't have been wearing a wig that was actually black. But given how they actually did Harry's hair, I don't see much resemblance between that and Severus's. (And IMO it is kind of sad that Severus's appears messier later on. I guess they might have been trying to give visual clues about stress or something, but to me it just comes off feathered and fluffed and even less like stringy/greasy than the first couple films.)

Yet, it was so cearly stated that James had to constantly mess his own hair up to gain that look

I interpreted that as that James was merely trying to enhance the natural messiness, because he thought it looked better/cooler. For example, adult James that Harry sees in the Mirror in PS has hair that "stuck up at the back, just like Harry’s did", without apparent active intervention.

he looks a decent bit less like James without those same-shaped glasses.

Which is just a question of resemblance (or not) between the actors... it is stated in canon that James wore glasses, but their shape isn't specified, unlike Harry's. I dunno, I try not to over-identify actors with the characters they are playing. (Especially where, as in this case, they often don't match the source material terribly well.)

Because even if Snape was Harry's dad, James would still be as well; a stepfather is still a father. JK never said "No, Snape is not" she only said that James is. I support this theory, though even so, Harry's got more than one father-figure, so Snape would only be one more.

I definitely agree that Severus fulfills some function of the father in Harry's life. As for whether he's biologically the father, hm, well... while it can't be solidly *disproven* given what we have in canon, it seems to me unlikely (even given I am a solid Severus/Lily shipper) that the two of them would have had sex at about the right time. Also, I would have then expected Harry to inherit more of Severus's traits, like the nose, the skin tone, the tendency to oiliness, the dark eyes (brown/black eyes would tend to dominate green, although of course not 100%). I dunno; as I said, what we have in canon doesn't necessarily disprove it, so someone is free to devote themselves to it if they wish, but it seems like probably not what we are supposed to conclude. (I usually differentiate in my head between what we can logically conclude and what JKR probably intended us to. The latter often falls into a kind of "Yeah, yeah, I know, BUT the other part is much more fun!" sort of bin in my head.)

Thanks, 99Nightstar, and welcome! :)

I've seen quite a few old-timers coming back to fandom as well as lots of newbies brought here by the movie. It makes me really happy. :)
