I'm still so torn about 50 Shades. On the one hand, it is just wicked cool that a fanfic got published and everybody is reading it now. It was also quite clever to turn vampire Edward who can't be touched by Bella at first because it's just too tempting to bite her into a dom with traumatic 'don't touch me' issues who gradually corrupts her. On the other hand, if this were my fic and it got published, I'd do my damndest to rewrite it and not leave it quite so obvious. Like, say, start with all of the side characters. Kill them all, make up original ones.
If I were Stephenie Meyer, I'd consider sueing. Especially since part 2 even takes on the insane 'stalked by a mad woman' plot instead of just exploring the characters. I'm afraid part 3 will have her pregnant.
But what I hate most about the books is that so far the message seems to be 'everybody who's really into BDSM is a sick fuck with issues who just needs to be saved'. Guided slowly into the vanilla light by a mousy girl. Oh my! Don't we all just want to save us a handsome, filthy rich bad boy? (Well, yes. But that doesn't make it a good novel.)
[I think I flocked part 1 of this. If somebody cares, I'll unflock it.]
