The Royal Encounter

So today was my favorite day at the deli... beating out the time when a lady came in and was telling us about how the school in Cambria was small, but she'd heard that the dentist's daughter was going to West Point and she'd heard one of the kids that graduated this year was going to Yale even. I told her, "Yah, but he's kind of a loser."

So, anyhow, I'm working at my Deli today, and this group comes in that's really really weird... Keith described them as "either German or Homeschooled."

That wasn't the Royal Family. Keith actually described the royal family as "straight out of a Tim Burton movie." I think it was mostly inspired by the way the princesses wear black eyeliner around their eyes. I almost said to him "I know a girl who wears eye-makeup kinda like that," (Background info) but then I thought to myself... "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaait a second." The father kinda looked like Larry Wall... I'd only seen a couple pictures, but he looked similar, and the mother looked similar to the picture or two I had seen of her. I wasn't sure though, because of the other sister and brother... Plus, her hair was lighter than I remembered... I wasn't sure who they were, actually. I thought siblings were possible, but not sure. I figured I'd just see what name they gave.

So I'm looking over Keith's shoulder as they order and he says "Larry." And I'm like (thinking) "That's not possible!" Luckily, he used a credit card, and while I couldn't see the full name on the card itself, the receipt he had to sign printed out Larry Wall. So I'm like "No way!" but I don't say anything, because, well, what would you say? So I'm making these salads and I'm like "Hmmm... No croutons... I wonder if the other girl is her friend Val... Maybe I'll ask if she's allergic to wheat." So, when I deliver it, the two girls split the one salad with croutons, I was like hmmm... I told Keith I might know them, and so he let me take the food out to them, and when I'm done I ask "Sir... Are you Larry Wall?" Everyone says "Yes" and the other girl's like "Yes, he TOTALLY is!"

So they invite me to pull up a chair and sit down with them, and I'm like "Ok, I can take lunch now then..." So I go make something real quick and come back and eat with them... They are a very awesome family, and very friendly... It was awesome.

I met Geneva on a Christian Anime forum like 2 years ago. We've talked online several times, but I've never actually met her in person... She's the Princess of Perl because her dad is Larry Wall, author of the computer programming language Perl, aka "the glue that holds the web together." So as far as the internet goes, they're basically royalty. Except that they're part of the Open Source movement, which means that they don't sell their software, and therefore are not making anything off of it. Anyways, the entire family is a mix of scientific, linguistic, and artistic genius, and very very cool.
