司馬 is probably cognate with the Master of the Horse (second in command to the Dictator in times of emergency/war) in the Roman republican era.

Completely pulling this out of my ass here, but 太史 might be akin to Censor (archivist/historian, they who document imperial acts etc. very anal and obsessive-compulsive, yes.)

太宰: vizier? when combined with 相國 --> 宰相 in later era = prime minister

行人: Consul in the equivalent sense of an American consul or such (ie representative of country)? Though 行 would tend to suggest some equivalent of the praetor peregrinus (literally wandering praetor) in Roman times who went around as representative of the Republic/Empire to the various territories.

公子 - was wondering about this: perhaps his mom wasn't of noble blood? which might explain why he seemed to be excluded from the succession/ feels the need to prove himself.

Thought of that too but I don't remember anyone making a fuss about that when it bacame apparent he was a candidate they way they did with Ji Kuai. Or maybe they did and I just forgot.
