A03.
“Listen, Draco, I know you mentioned a surprise for our outing, but this is not it,” Astoria said, crossing her arms as she warily looked at him and the broomstick in his hands. “Let’s do something else.”
Draco frowned. “Why? I thought we could take a quick zip around the Malfoy property. There’s a nice lake we can stop at. It's not too far from here.”
“I… My stomach hurts,” she muttered, scrambling for an excuse that he'd believe. From the look on his face, she didn't sell it very well.
“Are you scared?” Draco said, grinning when her eyes widened. “Come on, Astoria, there’s no need to be scared. I won’t drop you.”
“That’s not very reassuring,” Astoria retorted. “Besides, you could accidentally drop me, then this whole ‘us being forced to get married thing’ would be solved for you.” She couldn’t help but be bitter. She knew that Draco was only spending time with her because they were arranged to be married. She wouldn’t deny that it hurt.
Draco frowned at her words. “What? Astoria, I would never drop you on purpose,” he sputtered in shock. “I would never do anything to hurt you.” He looked pained at her words. “I just… I can’t believe you think I dislike you that much.”
Astoria let out a shaky breath, feeling guilty for lashing out at Draco. “Fine, we can go for a quick ride.” She swallowed the lump in her throat. She was terrified of flying, especially on brooms. But the idea of falling in love with Draco, especially if he didn't want her back? Even more terrifying.
“No, it’s fine. We can take a walk in the gardens instead.”
“No, we’re getting on that broom and going flying,” she said firmly. “So, let’s go, Draco Malfoy.” She took a firm step toward him.
“Merlin, witches are crazy,” he muttered under his breath. Mounting the broom, he guided Astoria to sit on the broom in front of him. “Hold on tight.”
Holding the broom, keeping her in his arms, Draco kicked off. He felt Astoria tense against him, but he carefully flew them to the small lake he had mentioned. When they landed, he looked at Astoria. “You okay?”
Nodding, Astoria slipped off the broom. “Okay, that wasn’t too bad,” she admitted.
He grinned. “I love the feel of the wind in my face… It’s freeing.”
Looking around, Astoria smiled. “This is beautiful. Thank you for showing it to me.”
“Yeah, I used to fly out here a lot when my parents argued,” he admitted. “Kinda like my own secret hideaway.”
“I’m sorry for what I said earlier, Draco,” Astoria blurted. “I… I’m just struggling because I’m falling in love with you, but I don’t know if you feel-” She froze, realising what she had just confessed.
A crooked smile appeared on Draco’s face. “You’re falling in love with me?”
Biting her lower lip, Astoria nodded. “Um, yeah, Draco, I am.”
He took a step towards her. “Good, because I’m falling in love with you too.” He closed the distance between them, claiming her lips in a tender, first kiss.
