Thoughts on the Hillenbohn-Sollit home

I'm having thoughts about the Hillenbohn-Sollit home. My brain defaulted to something framed in wood because I'm Human and live in a place and time where wood isn't a problem, but that isn't the case in Jon. You're looking at a limited, mostly imported wood supply, some rock, but most likely you're dealing in clay/adobe bricks.

The house was two stories, the tallest thing for miles. Made of brick and stone the first floor was raised two feet, sitting above the cellar with stairs to a covered porch wrapped around it. It had a rectangular footprint, the ground floor consisted of the kitchen, dining area, and a family room/gathering area, probably not separated by a wall, mostly open floorplan I'm thinking. You have the door separating the kitchen from the rest of it. The trap door down into the cellar would be located in the kitchen. It may also have an exterior entrance on one side of the house.

Now thinking of more Klamon-centric design, they probably don't do stairs. There's nothing to climb around Jon. It's an innate need and deep seated instinct to be able to climb things. I imagine Teigan would have struggled with this a bit when they hit the flat lands of the Plains of Tromar. Most places in Jon are probably single story and basements/cellars are probably a regular thing since tornadoes are a potential issue.

Since there's nothing to climb the house probably includes areas that allow it. Getting up to the second story probably involves climbing up a ladder or even just the wall itself. Not sure if Kayrin would insist on stairs. She lived among the Klamon for over a decade, she probably got used to it.

I think they ended up with a room against each wall in the upper story, the entrance is in the middle of the floor. Since they're not carving into rock the beds are probably more traditionally human, matresses on a slightly raised platform. Not sure if we'd see it really raised and needing to be climbed into, close on all sides, perhaps storage underneath the bed in several levels. I'm going to need to do some illustrating, I think. Each room has a bed, a window that can be opened, and probably the ability to enter and exit through it. Kallon would not have taken this route when Dantel and Jona made their visit because while it would have been more efficient and probably easier for him to not disturb the family going in and out, he might consider that his friends would find it a bit weird that he would simply climb out a second story window.

So on the bricks, I imagine Teigan would have helped expedite the process of making them and eliminated the need to find fuel. They would have needed to build a kiln. He could potentially do it without, but it takes more energy to hold the head in a specfic space (like Sray holding it to the wall) than taking advantage of insulating walls to hold the heat in. The cellar space they dug out possibly provided part of the clay source for much of the brick. They may have dug other pits as well.
I don't know if the barn would be brick as well, probably. They may have dug part of it down for insulation as well as sourcing more clay for the brick.

Time to poke around and rewrite bits that happen at the house...
