Kenbin directed his horse off the main road. The small drive was a familiar one, but this was his first time down it with the intent of actually meeting with any of its residents at the end. The wind ripped down from the North and he pulled up his scarf as his cheeks burned with the chill. Winter was near and the next storm would certainly bring snow. The grasses had already gone dormant, yellowed and rippling in the wind. He tucked his hat down tighter around his head and shrugged depper into his coat as he wished briefly that he had just stuck to maps. Miserable work, traveling in this weather. Certainly you sometimes had to camp out in bad weather to get the work done with maps and surveys, but usually you at least had some canvas and a warm bed roll between you and the worst of it. But no, he had wanted more rank within the Brotherhood and went through the process of learning how to scout out potential members, and now here he was, practically second in command at Engama, delivering a letter.
He was still a quarter of a mile away when he heard the clack of a door shutting, loud in the cold air. He strained to see movement around the house. Maybe someone went in after morning chores. Or maybe they noticed a stranger heading down the road and were warning the others. It would have been much nicer had one of them simply been in town.
As he drew closer he couldn't help but feel watched. He wished someone would appear, but at the same time didn't. Certainly he wouldn't answer the door, but the was question if he would recognize Kenbin, even without meeting face to face. With a shivver Kenbin shook off the thought. A hundred yards out he dismounted and tied his horse to the fence that ran parallel to the drive.
He lifted his foot to mount the steps when the front door opened. Looking up he pulled his scarf down and stepped stepped back, "Good morning, Kayrin Hillenbohn."
She appeared a little on guard as she pushed the door shut behind her and looked down at him. "I have seen you before, but I'm afraid I don't know your name."
"Kenbin Mounthyuns, madam," he pulled off his hat and regretted it, but sometimes you do things to be polite, even if they are uncomfortable and the thought of being rude to the Hillenbohns was worse than a cold head. "I had hoped to see you in town."
"Why are you here?"
"O, yes," he tucked his hat under his arm and fumbled with his buttons, "I have a letter here." He gave up and pulled off his gloves before he managed to dig into the coat and retrieved it. "It's from Danrick Mishor." He reached up and Kayrin hesitated briefly before carefully taking it from his hand, still looking skeptical of his presence.
