"It doesn't stop me from feeling disappointed in them." She replied.
"We'll just have to try hard not to be a disappointment to our own descendants." He commented casually.
"I doubt I will have any descendants, Mr. Serrith."
"Why?" He questioned without thinking.
It was a simple question, but not something she wanted to talk about, and she frowned back at him instead of replying and shook her head in dismissal.
"I'm sorry, I assumed ... I thought you had some ..." he trailed off, losing words as Sray looked back at him with increasing annoyance. He might be her instructor and know more about the Meim than she did, but he wasn't *that* much older than she was. She did not have to explain anything to him.
She let him flounder another minute before speaking. "The experiments didn't last long enough to prove out that hybrids could have children of their own. I couldn't hide half of what I am from someone. I barely managed a month here, and you and others guessed sooner."
Sray found Silfiya and told her about the meeting with Danrick Mishor.
"Would you like me to join you?" Silfiya asked.
"You have much better things to do than try to keep up with me or sit around waiting for me to show back up going somewhere you can't follow."
"I am not so busy on a Remstan as you would like to assume, Sray. A day spent outside with a good book might be just the thing."
Sray looked back at the older woman incredulously. "I am sure there are things you would rather be doing, Silfiya."
"But what else would you rather do, Sray? I want to help and support you. Why do you want to go?"
"Because..."
"Because that terrain speaks to a part of you that has been denied expression for years." Silfiya finished. "You go up in these mountains and you can be Sray Sollit Hillenbohn, not just Sray Hillenbohn, whom everyone else you ever met since you left Geteilpohth knows. You get to be the real you for once, the full you, and figuring out who that is, and I can't help but think that is one of the best things I could be helping you with."
