Old Farm Child

You know how when you read books about famous people and they grew up on an isolated farm and had to walk like five miles to school each way everyday? How did they do that? Most famous people have done that at some point in their life. That's a well-documented fact.

I was forced to walk eight miles yesterday (four each way) to the grocery store and back. The last four carrying groceries, mind you. It was really hard. It took over three hours, including shopping time. My legs were killing me! I really should have stretched. And not worn underwear. It was warm and muggy outside and my underwear kept riding up. It was terrible.

But seriously, how did these farm children do it? I realize that they didn't do it during harvest season or whatever. And that they probably skipped school a lot to go swimming and whip turtles and stuff but still. They didn't even have shoes! At least not what we modern humans think of as shoes. Basically they just wore foot gloves. Or old animal hooves tied with sun dried intestines.

Once I walked 17 miles in one day. But that was when I was young and motivated and wearing shorts. That took me all day long and by the end of the day I could barely walk. I found a suitable cane like stick on the ground and I was hobbling as I neared my house. My socks and shoes were black from walking along the highway.
