I've got your Mantool(tm)

So I gotta pimp this thing. It's not available for configuration or purchase yet, but it's something I want to keep my eye on, and I expect some of y'all will too. It's called Mantool, and basically the deal is this. When this thing drops, you'll be able customize a Leatherman-style multitool, set up with all the sub-tools you would actually use. Apparently you'd also be able to get additional sub-tools (tool-lets? I dunno..) and swap out the parts at need with a wiggle and a snap.

I mean, that part is kinda awesome. I'm thinking I'd be able to get something in a smaller form factor, because it would only have the parts I'd really need in a given context. Other Leatherman-style multi-tools end up having parts I never use, you know? Like if I'm working with computers, it's very rare that I'd need a metal file. I'm a big fan of customizing stuff, and of being able to customize my stuff for different needs. A hex-screwdriver would be handy while working with some electronics-type stuff, and a small, sturdy prying tool would be convenient when I get that inevitable misfire out at the range, but I generally don't need both at the same time, yanno?

The name is definitely catchy, at that. At first I'm thinking that the name is a bit sexist and all. There's a pretty fine line between funny-ha-ha sexist (like that Burger King commercial) and there's asshole sexist. The Mantool brand is pretty benign, comparatively speaking. But whatever, that's just me being inclined to read more into things than people intend. The important bit is the product itself - or rather the idea of the product, since it's not out yet.

Anyway, Mantool is in development now, and the guys running the thing are in the middle of drumming up enthusiasm for the idea so they can get some investment. It's a little frustrating, because dammit I want the Mantool now now now. I'll have to satisfy myself with the merch for now. Meredith will look pretty fetching in that camisole, I think.

Go visit the site, though. The Mantool people (which, I understand, includes a fair number of women) are looking for feedback and ideas as to what sort of contexts people would use a multi-tool (like, what, fishing, shooting, bicycling, cross-stitching, whatever), and what sub-tools and configurations would work well for those specific contexts. They seem eager for feedback and ideas.

It looks awesome, though. Check that noise out.
